    Actual Prius - Euro 63,5MPG(US) , EPA 50.
    Volt - EPA 37

Maybe it would, but Volt CS Mode should be Euro tested before making any assumptions...It works in a exquisit way...not the Euro rating, but CS Mode does!

You are comparing a hybrid to non-hybrid?

Yaris Sedan starts at $15k. It seats 5 and has more trunk space than the Volt. Next gen Yaris should get better MPG as the competition is heating up (Cruze and Fiesta).

Volt is a hybrid and the official 37 MPG is something a non-hybrid can achieve. Prius C (based on Yaris) is supposed to be a compact (same class with the Volt) and it is rumored to be get 10% better mileage than the current Prius 50 MPG.

You need to compare hybrid to hybrid within the same class to see Volt has substandard MPG. Even a BAS compact or assist compact hybrid (Insight II) can easily beat it.

If Prius C gets 55 MPG, why the hack would anyone bother to plug the Volt in to get 60 MPGe? The Volt would surely emit more emission.

The full electric drive would be of interest but you can get pure EV for less.

The original poster was making that comparison (and doing it incorrectly).

The Volt as a MSRP of $42,000. The government, well your tax dollars,
will be used to lower the price to about $35,000 or so.

I have a difficult time with normality to understand why it took GM so long an so much of OUR money to come up with the VOLT. When the
gas engine kicks in your getting Toyota Corolla mileage at best and your vehicle holds only 4 in the VOLT.

Remember electricity is not free, if you
don't believe me look at my electric bill every month.

The Nissan Leaf is less money and has a far longer electric range
than the Volt and none of our tax dollars was thrown at it.

The price of the Volt is way out of the range with "Middle Class" american and isn't that where the Volt target point is?

Sorry, Nissan is dipping in the pot as well. Nissan has a 1.4 billion dollar US government loan (like one of the GM loans) as well as it receives the same $7500 tax credit per electric vehicle.

Obviously Nissan is not partially OWNED by the government as GM is.

It does need to be hybrid to hybrid, but not all handily beat it.

    model...........mpg(city/combined/highway)
    Civic..................40/41/43
    CR-Z.................35/37/39
    HS 250h............35/35/34
    GS 450h............22/23/25

These are all defined compacts by the EPA, and where it was an option, an automatic.
The Civic, of the currently available hybrids, comes closest to the Volt in form and function. It has the same cargo volume and an additional seat. The Volt might be able to handle long items with a pass through between the cargo and passenger areas. The Civic's tested rating beats the Volt's, but they're close. Enough that there might not be difference for some in the real world.

The CR-Z is here because many Volt reviews feel it is a fun handling car. At least, in comparison to the Prius. I don't think anyone has compared the CR-Z and Volt driving dynamic yet, but they get the same economy, and the Volt is more flexible in terms of carrying capacity.

I had no idea the HS 250h tested so low. Maybe I wrong, but isn't this the Lexus based on the Prius? The larger engine and performance orientation would mean a drop in economy, but that much compared to the Prius?
Well, the Volt inches it out in economy, close enough that it doesn't matter.

The GS 450h.....well, yeah, that wasn't fair, but it is a compact.
I included Lexus because the base Volt is pretty loaded(to the gills wouldn't be out of line), and GM should rolled the Volt out as a Buick or even Cadillac when it became clear they couldn't meet their Chevy price point.

    The mid-sizers.
    Altima................35/34/33
    Fusion................41/39/36
    Camry................33/34/34
    Malibu................26/29/34

All are surely are more comfortable for the passengers.
The Altima and Camary have about the same cargo volume in the trunk as the Volt.
The Fusion is the only one to beat the Volt in economy ratings.

BAS was brought up, so we have the Malibu here. There is no BAS compact. but if there was I doubt it would beat the Volt. The standard Malibu gets 22/26/33 and the Cruze gets 24/28/36. It would be close.

GM might be coming out with a replacement to BAS which might do better. They wised up and stopped calling it a hybrid, and stayed in the realm of start/stop systems.
Guess we couldn't compare it to the Volt then. ;)
