went for our usual drive this morning to a place we walk every day. charged the car, it started fine, nothing out of the ordinary that we noticed.

4 mile drive, shut it down, walked for an hour, got back in, pressed power... nothing.

no dash lights, no head lights, no hatch opening, tried the fob against the power button, nope.

called triple a, guy was there in 15 minutes, put his meter on the battery, got a sad face on the screen :(

then it said 4 volts. put the jump pack on the jump point and she fired right up. drove home and checked the voltage, 12.2
charged the car again and 12.8, opened the driver door and 6 volts. i'm charging the 12v now, but i think something must have happened internally, can't understand why it shows 12.8 with no load.

gonna do some testing before i go spend $200.
so much for going for it, i thought for sure i'd get 10-12 years out of this one (yes, it's original). oh well, i said i would drive it until it dies, and i did, and it did.

now my advice to others will change

Check for loose battery cable connectors, but you know that.

i know, i know. there's a first time for everything.

it only charged for an hour, slowly dropped from 13.6 to 12.05, put the cables back on, 8 volts.

7 years on the 12 volt. It's the proverbial condition of a doornail.

Mine, too, is over 7 years old and a candidate for giving up the ghost. Good luck.

Sorry to hear the demise of your OEM 12V. After reading your story, now I am definitely shopping for an emergency jump start battery pack to keep in my car. No warning and sudden death of Prius with a dead 12V scare me. Yeah, I have AAA, but would be nice to have a battery pack onboard all the time.

All my failed car batteries and motorcycle batteries have been like that, full nice voltage after charge without load.
Then add little load and voltage drops hard and capacity is like 0,1Ah

Three car batteries, one motorcycle battery, not one did give any signs, just sudden death.
    Hugs for fallen!

You try a batteryminder? It has brought more than one battery of ours back from he dead. I'm a believer.

Sorry to hear about your battery. Good life for the battery. Here in Vegas we get 2 years. I’ve been shopping for one recently. I don’t like the price. Where did you get the new battery?

...and that's why I change my 12VDCs at 5 years, proactively.

...and I still change my oil/filter at 5,000 miles, proactively.

i was concerned, because when i called, i had to go through a bunch of menu's and finally got the recording: because of heavy call volume, please leave your number and we'll call you back, or hang on, and we'll answer your call in the order it came in,
so they answered after about 5 minutes, and the lady wanted more info than a mortgage application.
when we finally got through it, they gave me a 50 minute window, but the guy must have been in the area. he was driving a triple car, i was expecting a private tow truck.

I don't recall seeing any car batteries without a production date code stamped into it somewhere.
