Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    You can use the vented one there is a block off screw. Look at the very first picture I posted you can see the screw is in place.

    Yes in series, cut the "U" shaped pcv hose in half and use the 3/8 coupling. There are OCC with a dump lever that could be mounted by your oil filter and then you could dump both @ the same time. Like the one the ford f150 uses in the youtube link.
    My OCC is in a 3dprinted slip mount and I can pull straight up and unscrew the OCC for dump without disconnecting any hoses.
    You can use black fuel tubing, The clear braided line is rated the the temp, unaffected by the fuel/oil/water and does not kink. I can Also see whats going on in the clear. You will notice that it will turn reddish brown in time because the OCC will not trap 100% of the fine mist. If you blow through a clear straw you will see condensation built up on the inside, OCC will have same affect but it will catch the majority of the wet. I am sure that there is a better OCC out there, but there are no reviews or a shootout.

    Should clarify: I've heard airline style clamps are not good with plastic spigots, coolant spigots for example. They tend to put point load on the spigot just at the tightening screw, can crack plastic spigots.

    There is no plastic spigots on this OCC, It is aluminum, The hoses fit so tight I did not use a any clamps. I only put a clamp on the pcv valve itself.

    Found this pic on google, my same theory as to why pcv location is too low on the prius. Hitting the brakes, turning, oil runoff from the head/pistons travels along the inner wall into the pcv. That is why more than just oil mist is flying through the valve.

    Some really cheap catch cans do not have any baffling in them.

    I like the mason jar mounting location the best. I don't want condensate building up in the lines anymore than necessary.

    I wonder: would there be room to put the can quite close, say just remove the orig U-shape hose, plumb in the catch can as close as possible? I have the engine enderpanel off every 6 months for oil change: maybe some spot close but accessible from below:

    Is the G3 pcv located that low on the car in your diagram? Because on the g2 its located on the top of the valve cover.

    Since you'll be removing the intake manifold to make this setup, does that mean the egr cooler is back on?

    i have/had a few toyotas and all them (except the 3rd gen prius) have the PCV on top of valve cover with an elaborate air/oil separator below.
    i have no idea why the prius PCV is so low, makes it very hard to check/replace. are we positively sure there is no air/oil separator behind the PCV in 3rd gen prius?
    danlatu, you looked inside the block, right? does the pcv hole open directly into the crankcase?
    how about the 4th gen?

    Jacek, what we do know is that oil pools inside the throttle body, and it has to get there somehow.

    I replaced my PCV very recently, and it didn't seem to be oily. I didn't inspect the PCV hoses for oil, but the PCV valve itself was dry. Do you agree that when I remove the PCV hose to install the oil catcher, the hoses should be oily if this is indeed the problem?

    The other test is that I will remove and clean my intake manifold and throttle body, and we can inspect the throttle body after 5 or 10K miles to see if oil has returned. If the oil is gone and stays gone, then I'd assume the catch can works.

    I'm down, but it might be better to do in Fremont as your block will be cool and you might be able to do a little pre-work( remove the windshield wiper cowling, engine coolant, etc).

    If you still want to do Lafayette, you might have to be first up so we can get that work going first as it adds a couple of steps and time to the job.

    But count me in(y).

    Wonder how much is coming from the valve cover vent? Maybe tee the PCV and valve cover vent to the OCC then outlet to the IM.

    I did not see any oil coming from the top crankcase vent. It was clean @ 297k, the lower pcv hose was 1/2 clogged with sludge, the same sludge @ the bottom of the throttle body.
    If oil/fuel/water was flying through this crankcase vent hose, you would see oil all over the top of the throttle body butterfly valve
    turbocharged engines have oil and carbon contamination that cover intercoolers, turbo's, piping, throttle body, intake plenums, valves etc.
