Oil Change By Evacuation Instead of Drain Plug

i wonder if most sludge/debris would flow out the drain plug. whereas the vacuum might leave it sitting in the bottom of the oil pan?

 

Can you suck the oil filter out too?

 

Might be worthwhile for oil change only (leaving oil filter). I'd still have same concerns as @bisco tho.

And really, wouldn't you miss lying inches from a ton of steel, with a trickle of used oil nearly to your armpit?

 

Maybe something to do every other oil change.

funny, I googled 2016 Prius oil change today and found a video, a guy doing dipstick suction method, with a mighty vac. But:

This seems akin to pumping transaxle fluid in from below, not for me. I'll stick to gravity, it's never let me down. No wait a sec...

Not only that, but you don't get out what oil is trapped in the filter either.

There are really near to ZERO situations where that is really better.......or as good.

 

Yes I have done this...back when we first got the 2010 and wanted to change the oil more frequently. Basically changed oil every 5K (or sooner) but left the filter go till the 10K spec. Worked great...especially in the winter.

 

i use similar to o/p's pump to remove the excess oil the dealer kindly puts in.

 

That's the official maintenance schedule from honda now, oil filter change only at every second oil change. However, the one dealership I've dealt with (before I threw up my hands about their chronic overfill, went back to DIY) would treat you like a nutcase if you asked them to leave the oil filter.

What I did, when DIY'ing the oil change only, was remove the filter, tip it out, reinstall it. Best of both worlds.

One time, the last time a dealership did an oil change on any of our cars, I had a WTH moment when checking the dipstick overfill *, opted to bleed out a bit. I went from below, partially remove the drain bolt, till it was almost off, then held it in place and cocked it slightly to get a trickle, into a graduate. My hands were shaking by the time I got enough out though.

But that got me thinking: I'm paying someone to do something, and then going through this BS??

* Spec for our Civic Hybrid was 3.2 liters, they routinely dumped in 4.0. Charged for it too, of course.

 

i'll have to donate it, these cars just don't use any oil!

 

I guess Honda's policy, to leave the oil filter change to every second oil change stems from a couple of factors:

1. The premise that the oil filter is good enough to last that long, so the policy reduces expense, labour, manufacturing requirements.
2. You've effectively cut in half the quantity of used oil filters to be dealt with.

So far, since Toyota's saying change it every time, that's what I've been doing, but still thinking on it.

 

For those who don't want the mess of changing the oil, try the Fumoto F103S drain valve. It replaces your drain plug and make it easy the change the oil without a mess. I installed mine on its first oil change and with the Fumoto Hose Kit, I can drain the oil into an old oil jug. With over 15,000 miles on the car, Ive had no problems of leakage and I have the same setup on my Jeep Wrangle for over 6 years with no problems either.
