So I was thinking of doing an oil change on my car and received this crazy service coupon from my dealer. $9.95 for my 2005.

That's a great price. Jump on it before OPEC raises oil prices. : )

And check the dipstick for making sure the dealer doesn't overfill .

Also, be ready for a list of dealer suggested services and repairs. But you know that already.

I actually like the free 40 point inspection and list of things I need to do. Saves me the time in identifying those issues.

Of course I would just address those issues myself

If something looks like it's too good to be true? It usually is! I have an independent mechanic Michael at Lexology who takes care of all my clients and friends who ask where they should go for honest service. He is my expert and honest opinion when I'm in too deep. Still, I check the fluids and change the Bosch filter and Castrol "Use your dip stick Man!" Edge Synthetic oil every 10,000
I'll guarantee 90% of those "Complementary" inspections reveal a repair that may not have been needed, and worse, squeezing twisting belts and hoses unnecessarily or roughly leads to premature failure.
In short, do not let anyone under you hood that you wouldn't invite to dinner
Just ask the good people there at Longo Toyota how many of their inspections indicate a needed repair?
Get an independent mechanic, get to know his family, friends, birthday and anniversary. It will save you thousands over the life (400,000 miles) of your Prius.

The oil change with synthetic always jumps the price up, by strangely arbitrary amounts. Bewildering to me, getting Toyota OW20 synth for $4.50 per liter.

Yeah, but at either $10 or $30, they're not making any money. Being positive: it's an introductory offer, to get your custom.

FWIW, I don't trust that particular dealer as far as I can pick up a Toyota and throw it. Years ago they sold a pickup out from under me AFTER I had already put down $500 on a truck to hold it until I could come in with a cashier's check for the full price the next morning. I bought what I wanted from West Covina Toyota instead of buying the one Longo tried to sell me instead. Over the years there were a lot of "lack of integrity" stories going around the San Gabriel Valley about Longo. I do admit it was years ago and things can change but their reputation then was that they were like Wal-Mart; high volume based on low prices but a lack of trustworthiness and a lack of quality.

    Be careful.

I don't agree Longo has low prices. From what I've researched, they are higher than others in the area.

I actually have issues with their service department. But for $10 and a simple oil change, hopefully they won't screw that up

As I said, things can change. That was their reputation before 2000.

I got the same coupon in the mail. Longo has ALWAYS overfilled my oil. Dating back for 25 years. I have to bring my own quart bottles of oil. If they use their oil, they will always overfill it. Doesn't matter what I tell them, they still do it!

That, plus I can never get a straight answer on exactly what brand of oil they are using. The last guy told me they do not use the black bottle Toyota oil. He thinks it is Pennzoil. No big deal I guess, oil is oil. But those service guys sure are evasive.

Up here Toyota 0W20 bottled liters were always in a silver bottle. Since spring 2011 anyway. The bottle changed look maybe 2 years back, looked like Mobil 1 bottle last time I bought (I buy it bulk now, bring my own container).

And I don't believe for a second, that the mechanics do that 48 point or 65 point inspection, or whatever it is.
There's only one dealer where I can actually watch them, and see a few of the mechanics. They don't even refill the washer fluid reservoir when it's near empty. And I watch them rotating the tires on several vehicles, and they didn't even inspect the brakes. And they never ever inspect the headlights, taillights, or brake lights.

The sad truth is, most of those guys just do as little as possible. The bare minimum. I sure miss the days when I was younger, and did it all myself.

Probably won't even get a new oil filter for 10 bucks! :ROFLMAO:

I was referring to the regular 10,000 mile maintenance. Oil change, phony inspection, tire rotation, etc. If you truly believe they actually inspect 65 different things, more power to ya.

They have a free 40 point inspection and there is a checklist they give you when they are done.

I don't like dealership service, just the $10 sounds good

Paging @edthefox5 to the "Oil change specials" thread, please, JC is threatening to put the vat oil in the 05'!!

$10 bucks is crazy if you actually come away with the Denso F2 on there, and the car is quite an oil burner anyway, yes? Plus you'll have fun trying to find anything wrong with all the "issues" they list for you.

Vat oil in a 11 year old car, can't really hurt it. That new oil filter is already $5.

Yes all my gen2 cars burn oil

I thought so too, until my dealer's mechanic must have used an impact wrench to speed things up. Stripped the drain plug. They replaced the pan on that one but it took a lot of my time.
