Started on my seventh oil change today (52k miles) and tried to take off the oil filter cap. It was on really tight and after much torquing, the removal tool slipped and rounded the ridges on the cap. The edges of cap also started crumbling! Freaking out of course, I continued torquing but it would not give. I knew it wasn't coming off that way. Then it occurred to me to use a hammer ( :) ) and a block of wood to tap on the cap where it has a tab (see red circle in photo attached), rotating it counter-clockwise just a tad. That worked thank God.

It really seems like the cap material has become brittle. So you all may consider ordering a backup when you can get it cheaper. You can also see in the photo where the edge crumbled.

I didn't want to have to pay the high prices in town so I put the cap back on but much more loosely than normal. I will replace it next change and order a new one online now. filtercap.jpg

Ouch, good thing I don't have this problem, and my vehicle's almost 50k. I've been only hand tightening it with a ratchet and never had this problem before. Could be the oil cap material that is causing this or could be the torquing of the oil cap housing? either or, just be careful everyone :)

Thanks for the caution and the picture. I have my 75k coming up in a couple of weeks and will have to look carefully at the cap.

It does seem brittle. Could be the colder temps of here breaking it down? I normally don't tighten down much at all either but man it was on there good.

could be, I bought my oil filter cap from Snap-On and done hundreds of oil change with it and never had a problem with the cap. Is your cap the thin type or the thicker type?

Are you talking about the oil filter cap wrench? If so, I have the assenmacher one. Nothing wrong with the wrench.

yeah I was talking about the wrench. That's the same one I have and never gave me problems...

It could be over torquing the oil filter cap housing which can put more stress on the wrench or housing when removing it.

I don't know, but I always hand tighten the housing until it stops spinning and not torque it down an extra turn with the ratchet and never had the stripping of the housing before.

    Thanks for sharing though!

I have never had problems either. I hand-tighten and then just a little extra with the ratchet. No torque-wrench.

Anyway, one for the books. :)

The cap plastic kinda reminds me of bakelite, like the old telephones.

Yeah, something like that. You would think a metal cap would be in order for this situation.

I bought a backup cap about a year ago. I had the same problem and bought a wrench that has cuts in it to slide over the whole cap and it works much better than any of the metal wrenches suggested.

I dont know why they dont make caps with a hex fitting or some other wrench fitting so all you would need is a common wrench or socket instead of a special tool.

    Call me "worry wart," but I bought the authorized Toyota service wrench;

Toyota OIL FILTER WRENCH Part Number 09228-06500-02

and, I have an OER filter cap in the wings.

I also mark the cap before the first oil change, so that I do not over tighten it.

my HHR with the ecotech engine had a hex head on the oil filter cap. thankfully I did not drain the oil first. cause i took me an hour to modify the socket to fit in the awkward confines...

is it too much to ask for automakers to sit down and design 1 spin on filter that will fit ALL vehicles...it really can't be that hard can it????? or at the very least.. one oil filter per car maker?

One type of Wiper arm connection....????

    one size lug nut??

and maybe god forbid...one set lug nut pattern for 4lug and 5 lug wheels...

too much proprietary parts. If you really hate proprietary parts....don't ever....buy a john deere...

Maybe pick up a torque wrench, 3/8" drive, lower torque range would be best bet. The torque spec for the oil filter canister is 18 foot pounds.

I've had ours off 5 or 6 times now (Canadian schedule, every 6 months), no issues yet, knock-on-wood. but thanks for the heads-up!

I'm removing the oil filter cap with with a heavy gauge socket, I've used it for years with Honda filters (same dimensions).

For back up I've got a wide-jaw pair of vice-grip style pliers. Never had to use them, mainly use them for stubborn peanut butter jar caps. But for an oil filter with rounding corners they might save the day. Looks like this:
