Thanks for sharing you trouble. I will be inspecting my oil filter housing more carefully from now on before I reinstall it.

Did my first oil change today and found out that the dealer had the housing on way too tight. I had a heck of a time getting it off. I have the right wrench but I chipped a piece of the housing off because I had to tap it with a hammer to break it free. Learned a few things to make it go faster next time.

Oil was a little dirtier than I would like to see it so I might go to 7500 mile OCI.

Yeah, I would highly recommend using a block of wood between the cap and the hammer. What piece broke off?

I did want to clarify that the reason for this thread was to point out how brittle the oil filter cap seemed to be, not how tight it was. The cap seemed more susceptible this time around then in the past. The material just crumbled.

The cheapest replacement I found was $30.

One of the plastic flanges. I was using a large Torx screwdriver to tap it off.

    One thing is for sure!
You will not lose your wrench, maybe both wrench and cap, but you will not lose your wrench! :p

I did that too. Now I have a good wrench as spare cap just in case.

    Spiderman,

I changed my oil and filter this weekend at 75k miles. My oil filter cap looks new, nothing like the one in your picture. Could it be the weather up there and the salts, etc. on the roads?

Yes, we are getting on up in the mileage now. It seems like yesterday we were all new Gen III enthusiasts comparing notes on our new vehicles.

I've got one problem with this: I need the that socket for our son's Civic (same filter size), LOL.

Curiousity Question: Is that Oil Filter cap the same as the one used on my 2009 1.8L Pontiac Vibe? Sure looks like it is.

Probably since it is a toy engine.

Very possible. It is a Matrix under the skin, and parts get swapped.

The Pontiac Vibe uses the same Toyota engine as did the Corolla of the same year.

Both were made at the joint venture NUMMI GM-Toyota plant in California.

The plant closed down with the GM bankruptcy, and the joint venture ended.
