You don't need ANY TPMS sensors to operate your car, just sayin'.

Yeah, yeah, yeah I konw... But it's nice to be able to see the actual tire pressure real time, all the time. The dumb TPMS that came with the car on the other hand is almost useless. And certainly I realized that legally it is OK to drive a car with defective TPMS in my state. I forgot which one, but very few states in the US require functional TPMS to drive on public roads.

You don't have to worry about protecting them at all. They will survive just fine inside the wheel.

I think the main problem is when tire shops install tires: they're legally obligated to send you on your way with functional TPMS? But there are a few nudge-nudge-wink-wink work arounds?

Nobody checks for TPMS. Even on state inspections, I don't think this is checked.

Tire Rack ships tires all the time without TPMS.

    Mounted on rims?

Loose and mounted on rims might be one work-around, anyway.

You’ll fail inspections in Hawaii, Rhode Island, Vermont & West Virginia if tpms light is lit.

On a side political note, all the states above are blue states.

They don't have to install functional TPMS. They just can not disable functioning TPMS. As long as TPMS was not working when you bring the car in and that fact is noted to the shop, they have no legal obligation to install or repair TPMS.

As noted above by @Grit, a few states do require functioning TPMS to pass the inspection.

Yes. Mounted and balanced, full of air, with lug nuts if required, ready to bolt on the car. I have bought three sets of snows from them, all in this configuration. There is an ordering option to include TPMS if the car is so equipped - I decline and get them without TPMS.

I will bet this is not a problem for those who drive winter tires without TPMS, particularly in Rhode Island and Vermont. I would like to hear from a forum member whose car failed inspection during the winter with snows on without TPMS sensors. Or perhaps they schedule the inspection for summer.

Well, it really depends on where you take your car to be inspected. Someplace will fail the car automatically if there is any warning light lit on the dash.

This is certainly the case, but I'm sure many drivers in the snow states are running non-TPMS wheels in the winter. This is a common practice. If this is causing inspection failures, I'd like to hear some evidence.

Googling the subject, I found this newspaper article from Vermont. At least at March 2018, TPMS light on the dash failed inspection. But the law might have been changed by now.
Vermont may make it easier for vehicles to pass inspection

If an inspector failed your car, couldn't you hand him (or her) a bike pump and say go at it?

My opinion - the whole TPMS thing is nonsense and a band-aid put in place because lazy car owners weren't checking their tire pressures. I have no interest in paying for any of these sensors - a good $30 racing gauge works fine and for a lot less money. Related thread in this forum where somebody wanted an oil level sensor because he/she didn't check their oil level before the engine was damaged. I have to pay for additional "features" on my cars because other drivers don't have a clue how to maintain their vehicles.

Is there a way to disable that TPMS light on the dash? My snows do not have sensors and the annoying light is on all the time in the winter.

Or it was all Firestone's fault.

I am not aware of any way. On my wife's car, we used to put a piece of black tape over the light when running snows in the winter, but now she doesn't mind the light and we don't tape it.
