Can someone please recommend an exact fit oil filter wrench for the Toyota oem oil filter - I bought a shitty Walmart Hyper Tough 65mm 14 flute wrench and it failed miserably, slipping before the filter budged.... To remove the filter I ended up drilling some screws through the filter wrench into the filter which worked like a charm. However, for next time, I just want a wrench that fits perfectly.

We use the oil filter cap wrench. Its a cap that goes over the end of the filter and has a female 3/8 female ratchet hole for your 3/8's wrench
    or extention.
I do not know the part number I bought mine at the dealer. Someone will be along in a sec with a part number or please use the search forums link up top and search

    oil filter wrench

there's probably a 100 thread on it. The cap works good to get the filter off but the filter tends to get stuck on it as its a thin walled filter and the wrench cap kinda bites into it a little and gets stuck. It fits a little too tight for me.

Yes, I bought a cap wrench which was also apparently the right size and it failed miserably. Looking for a better quality version.

    Here' s a really good one that fits;

It's half the price of the same rugged one as the official one for Toyota.

Oil filters aren't supposed to be so tight on there that you should need a wrench in the first place? Just tighten it by hand so when it's time for an oil change you can loosen it by hand. And yes sometimes the old one is hard to remove, but that's what a pair of channel lock pliers is for. Why clutter up your tool box with unneeded wrenches that only have one use rather than many?

Well, I have a torque wrench and since I'm torqueing the drain bolt to spec, I thought I would do the same for oil filter. Finger tight/hand tight is very subjective. I did read to thread on until the filter gasket contacts the car, then turn an additional 3/4... but, I'd rather use my torque wrench.

Thanks Georgina, a bit pricey but I may give that one a shot.

I'd second the Honda filter socket recommended by @Georgina Rudkus. I got one around 1990, still going strong. Used it on Hondas, our current Prius, and recently on a Mazda.

Torque value for the spin-on filter is 13 ft/lbs IIRC. 3/4 turn past first contact works about the same.

Mendel, what's your source for that torque value? I had read 17 ft/lbs previously... I'm guessing both are fine, but would like to know what's the official spec. thx

I’ve used the claw type tool to remove oil filters of various sizes for 20 years now with great success.

The repair manual (official spec) is 13 ft.*lbf (17.5 N*m).

The Toyota part number for the special service tool (SST) is 09228-06501, just for everyone's information.

IIRC the style of oil filter with permanent housing is 17 and spin-on is 13. Just on phone now.

Good info. Does the gen 3 have the permanent housing?

That's how they come, but you can convert to spin-on.

Have you tried the slightly longer oil filter? It's longer but still well above the oil pan. You do any damage to the longer filter you have wiped out your oil pan, and have way bigger problems.

Gen 2 thread my friend. Ask your question in the gen 3 thread. Entirely different engine. Plus all Gen 3 Toyota Prius and every other Toyota comes with a spin on filter. I think Mendal is referring to a reusable spin on cartridge that uses a disposable internal filter. My BMW has a permanent oil filter housing from the factory. Toyota does not use that type of oil filter system. I do torque down the cap for the oil filter in my BMW though. All the spin on filters, I just turn them as tight as I can.

I should add with the exception of the new Supra. It's basically a BMW and has the BMW straight 6. That Toyota might have a permanent oil filter system, after all it is a BMW engine.

Gen 3 Prius and almost all the newer Toyota engines do have a permanent housing with just replaceable filter element.

Really? You just replace the paper filter and nothing else? I guess every Toyota I change oil on is wrong then. They all have spin on oil filters.

Yes. Rubber o-ring seal (or 2) is also replaced.
What Toyotas are you talking about? Probably older engines.

Could you send me a picture of a permanent Toyota oil filter housing? I have never seen one.
