There are leak detection dyes for engine oil as well.

There is a dye for coolant leaks, too.

Your previous post says freon, I'm talking about antifreeze/coolant.

Just came back from the dealer with a routine oil change.I was told my 2010 Prius had a timing cover leak. I was told it would cost $2600. I told them I could not afford to fix it at this time , since he told me it was minor and I could wait a bit to get it fixed. Then the manager came out and told me he would give me a deal for $2500 to fix. No pressure he said. I declined. As I was walking out, I got a quote for $1490.61 good for 30 days. What should it cost to fix a leaking timing cover?

@hollyg, this is an older thread, but I had a similar problem. Here is my thread:

Timing cover oil leak | PriusChat

I was still within warranty and had it repaired free, but I was initially quoted $1700 for the repair. However, consensus on the forum was that if the oil leak is minimal, the repair can be postponed indefinitely. Just monitor your engine oil level and top off as needed. However, with a slow, seepage type leak, you will most likely not need to add oil between oil changes.

Thanks for the info. I will keep this in mind. I believe they were trying to squeeze all the money I don't have in my wallet. Just strange how it was $2600 to start with, then dropped to $1400. Really! Big difference in cost!

If I were her I'd just monitor it and let it be. There's probably not even enough oil leaking out to make it onto the covers underneath and drip out onto the ground.

My 2010 timing gasket was replaced last year. Total was around $800, which warranty covered. Lakeland FL. Wow, that's quite a bit more they quoted you....

Alot of cars weep oil from the crank sensor. If I was weeping oil on that cover I would locate the crank sensor (has wire to it bottom of timing cover) and watch it.

I bought my used 2010 Prius IV 4 years ago. It currently has 68K miles on it. Took it in for an oil change today and was informed there is a leak from the timing chain housing. Normally $1700 to repair but it's under warranty still so it will cost $50. Never saw any leaks on driveway or from under vehicle. I think it's worth the $50 but seems odd that so many fail at such low mileage.

^ Could you post another picture, backed out more? It's hard to understand orientation and location. Or just some more explanation: looking up, down, what side?
