Of course, if you're the adventurous type and don't mind totally voiding your warranty there are the folks at the California Cars Initiative:

    http://www.calcars.org/priusplus.html

For an estimated 10-12K you can have a plug-in Prius+! If folks weren't asking so much for used Prius II's (2004 and on) I would be sorely tempted to give this a try. As it is, I think I'll drive my '06 for a bit and perhaps take this route down the road a bit.

    Yes, yes I did. :D

Now all I have to do is get it. I didn't like the trade-in offer the dealer made so I put my current ride up for sale. I was prepared for a multi-week selling effort so of course it sold almost immediately. Now I'm stuck without a Prius or a daily driver. I have a feeling that I'll be *real* happy to see my car arrive on the lot...

So you have NO car right now? If you just ordered on 12/26 wasn't that to just get on the waiting list for one that could take months?

That's great you sold you car so fast. That doesn't happen for everyone.

When is your Prius expected in?

I agree about the fast sale. I think it's a Zen thing - I wasn't trying so it sold.

I unfortunately don't have a firm delivery date on my car. I left some voicemail with my salesman to see if we can fix that. I'm notivated now, you see.

Good luck with your buying process!

but Tracy, if you want to drive the Prius for over 10 years like you stated, why would you worry about resale value?

Yeah I guess I shouldn't worry about that. Maybe I can even have it last longer than 10 years! :p

PS That's why I move up to #8 now. I know hanging around you guys if I didn't do it now I would probably be doing it soon  Might as well take care of that situation right off the top!

thats the bummer thing about buying pure cutting edge technology... it gets outdated toooooo fast!...
Just like a computer, before your warranty is out, there will be a better model for sale.

But at least the resale is much better than a computer!.... but brace yourself for heartbreaks as the newer ones keep coming out with faster, cleaner, more efficient characteristics.

There is no escape?... there is never a "good" time to buy to escape this... But there is not a "bad" time to buy either, "except right at the end of the year when buying last years model".
All you can do is embrace it. Rather than getting bitter about better cars constantly coming out.... just get excited that they are coming out and you can get one too!...
There is a certain amount of pride in owning the latest and greatest, but if that were to last, we would be at a technology standstill.

I kinda hope these Lithium Ion Plugin Kits come down in price and a simple plugin kit upgrade will bring alot of improvement! They are big bucks right now, but by the time my battery starts getting tired, they should be cheap.

Its never cost effective to keep updating too often, but at least the resale is good enough that it doesn't hurt too bad if you want to.... and if you don't, then you have a good car that will last a long long time!..... either way your a winner!

Ohh, another thing I was wondering Tracy. You have 2 cars, you are a getting a third. You don't rely on any of them to get you to work, why would you need to have them just in case? What would this just in case situation have to be to be justifiable to have 3 cars. Seems to me one car would do it all, and if you are getting a Prius, it can do fine in a lot of situations, I just see no reasoning in your situation to have all these cars. I am just curious.

Ok actually I will have 4 vehicles IF you count my moped ;) (5 if you count the motorcylce in my other garage :p )

ok I'm ready for your question and here is my answer:

Keeping the moped cause it's SO darn cheap on gas and I have fund driving. Yes I get teased about it but I can handle that! Actually most people that see it wanna know where I got it! Or they get jealous of me and the gas station when the cashier announcing maam your gas total is $1.00 LOL

I'm keeping the 1992 Ford Escort because I would only be able to sell it for around $500 or so. I have plenty of room on my huge commercial driveway to store it. I will use it once in awhile to haul something big. For example once I had my daughter go pick up my snowblower at my other house in her Lancer. Well when her friend removed it from her car he caught the blade on her door. I won't be insuring the Ford. If I need to drive it my insurance company is cool about putting a 24 tempory insurance on it at no cost. So the only cost I'll have by keeping it is the plates.

Now onto the Ford Hornet RV. Not sure at this point if I'm going to keep it or sell it. I will probably sell it this Spring. I gotta put new tires on it. I started to sell it last year but then I realized that the tires needed to be replaced so took it off sale until I could take care of that. By then it was close to winterime so I though I should wait to chance the tire until Spring. I'm going to put tires on it and either start driving it or sell it. I don't have insurance on the RV expect Comp (I think that's what it's called) and that is $25 per 6 months.

Does this answer your question? I appreciate your insight to it. I know it's stupid to have so many cars especialy because of the extra cost of insurance to do that. In my case I would only be paying the $25 on the 3 other vehicles I will have besides the Prius. I hate paying for insurance so it will suck a bit having my insurance go up to fully cover the Prius It's only going up $26 a month for the Prius so that's not bad.

seems like a lot of hassle to me. Why wouldn't just donate that escort? Or just use your escort until it dies and pay off that mortgage since you said it's important for you. Like I said before it's not like you are relying on a vehicle for work or something and you still have that moped. why worry about extra junk somewhere on the parking lot. And to waste time to insure it for one day so you can bring something from your other house. Why just not do that in a Prius (if you are really getting one)? Or why not have one house so you don't have to run there to bring one thing and you have to insure your escort for one day. how old is that escort?

No hassle. Just a quick 2 minute phone call!

Well, I do have my other house rented to a good friend that let's me use the garage I had built for some of my business storage. (need it)

The Escort is a 1992. It's already having quite a bit of issues. So I have already been sticking with driving something older for over a couple years now with the Escort. It's about to the point now where it's not going to pay to fix it. I have already been doing what your saying I should be doing. That can't go on forver though. I'm pretty happy I have gotten over 2 years out of it. (Actually I think close to 3) I don't want to wait until if completly dies. Then I would to desperate to get a car asap!

In the 20+ years I have been driving the only new vechile I have ever gotten was my moped. I think at my income level I at least deserve one nice new car huh? I WILL be paying cash for it!

Thanks for finding that quote for us. Note that the question being answered is, "Does Toyota support the modification of my Prius to be a plug-in Hybrid and run on electric mode only with a switch? [Emphasis mine.]

The EV mod does not convert the Prius to a plug-in hybrid. This refers to the Prius-Plus project. The word "AND" above clearly excludes any mod that does NOT convert the Prius to be plug-in.

The reason Toyota is so concerned about the Prius-Plus project is that it VERY GREATLY ALTERS the HV electrical system of the car.

The EV mod we have been talking about only adds a switch already available on the Japanese and European models, to make use of programming that's already in the Prius.

That being said, the switch is not for everyone.

And that's his studio portrait! Imagine what he looks like without all of that makeup and good lighting!

Wow this thread has been busy the last couple of days! Tracybeans, it sounds like you're definitely leaning towards getting a Prius. Jolly good. You'll enjoy it I'm sure. I've had mine for 2 months now and have really had a blast with it. I bought mine to put my money where my mouth was with regards to energy/environmental issues. I really didn't care about the money arguments. They weren't important to me. On the other hand, they are to many people so I felt that giving you that side of the story was important. There are plenty of folks here to tell you about the bright side of Prius ownership.

Like others have said, the EV mod is fun and can be useful at times, but it's probably a wash at the end of the day. I've developed a bit of a gear head complex since owning this car (I've always hated the details of how cars work... until now) and thought it would be fun to install and experiment with. It has it's time and place, but it's not some kinda wonder device that makes energy. If it were it'd cost more than $45! :p

Best of luck with whichever path you choose to go down.
