"Old" Gas in the Tank

I bought the car from my friend I towed at home because the battery was bad it’s that since October I put a battery in yesterday and the mechanic said the gases varnished we tried several times to start the car it runs for 10 seconds and then shuts down

 

Which battery was bad? Were you able to jump start it back in October?

If the car ran for 10 seconds, gas engine probably never started, just the hv battery providing the power.

I don't think it's a gas issue, more of a fuel delivery to the engine issue.....injectors, fuel pump, throttle body, etc sorta issues

My question is why your friend initially let it sit for a year, did it already have issues?

 

If it runs for 10 seconds and then dies, it actually never really started.

Each time you try to start it you drive down the voltage of the hybrid battery. You have very few attempts before the hv battery is so low that it can no longer start the car. Maybe less than 10 attempts? If this happens, then you will have to figure out how to charge the hv battery.

Now we're starting to get somewhere.

Personally, I no longer am a follower of the "old gas" scenario, as I've personally fired up a couple cars that have sat about 2+ years merely by replacing the 12v batteries. I think modern fuel has come a long way and doesn't cause near the problems as years back.

Air + fuel + spark = running engine. One of em is missing.

 

Do u think I need to replace the spark plugs. I honestly think it’s the old gas. When we smell the Exhaust smells like old gas I don’t think it’s enough to ignite the ignition

 

Thank you so much I may need to take you up on that I just had the new hybrid battery put in last night and we tried about 10 times already so I might have 4five more times to try it the hybrid battery is going low

 

Give it a shot of starting fluid, if it start and then dies you have a fuel problem.

What problem flashes across the screen?
What trouble codes were read?

 

'problem' can mean low oil?

 

never put new gas in with old gas. finish up the tank before refueling.

 

what did mechanic recommend?

 

Read the codes using a code reader that can read Toyota specific codes (Techstream, etc.). See what the codes say and pursue fixing them. I agree with others that I'm inclined to think you have some other issue, codes will tell you what it is.

Clean maf
Clean thottle body
Sop up extra oil from intake
Check State of Charge of battery. Above 50% would be nice.
Then use starter fluid to see if you can get car started and stay running using starter fluid.

Before trying this it would be nice to have some data from the car using diagnostic tools. It will cost less than $50. (torque pro app on android device, elm 327 OBDII Bluetooth reader)
Then you could see data like the attached photo. Plus you could read any error codes and clear them.

 

Sometimes it is more efficient for me to just talk through things via phone while getting feedback from someone to than type it all out blindly.

After it is solved perhaps the person who had the problem wants to come back on here and type out exactly all the avenues that were pursued, that might be more helpful. That way the community can see how they solved it.

 

I would not mind talking to you on the phone. I’m at wits end with this. I’m running out of time and money.

When troubleshooting cars three words come to mind. Quick, Easy & Cheap.

Do the quick, easy and cheap stuff first, then work your way into the time consuming, hard expensive stuff.
