Just bought a wheel and tire today. Had an issue last week (exacto blade pierced the front right tire and I was in a rural area 175km from home but fortunately close enough to a small town garage willing to repair the tire with a proper patch just before closing time). Weather was awful and I didn’t want to be stranded if the goop didn’t work. Have a long trip planned for Thursday to Tuesday in mostly rural areas, so picking up the full size spare tomorrow. Will keep the goop handy for worst case scenario of multiple flats (had that happen to me back in the 80s). Will use @Salamander_King’s storage method. 150$ CDN tax in for tire and wheel (mounted and balanced) is a small price to pay for piece of mind.

You might drive on the good one and keep the patched one as a spare.

I bought the cheapest generic no name for a spare, so I’ll take my chances with the patch. My mechanic of the past 17 years inspected the repair and pronounced it safe and an excellent job. Good enough for me.

Your post has been the MOST helpful out of the ones Iʻve read. I am in the process of sourcing the components (rim, tire, jack, etc) to carry along in my 2017 Prius Prime. I did find the rim ($150 here at the Toyota dealership in Hawaii). Ouch! And the tire itself Iʻm trying to find it with our local tire shop to avoid paying the direct shipping costs. I wanted to ask how has your spare tire held up? Have you used it yet?

$150 for just the rim! Yikes

Then you still need to get a jack, tire, and a lugnut wrench?

Maybe it'll be less expensive to get a AAA Hawaii membership?

I think 4th gens (including plug-in, aka Prime version) without spare did have jack and wrench?

5th gen (including plug-in, aka Prime) has stripped out jack and wrench.

Aloha. Thanks for the kind words.

Spare tire has held up well. No, have not had to use it yet.

I had two separate flats before getting the spare tire. None after. Go figure :)

Is the excerpt 4th or 5th gen? Pretty sure I heard here the latter loses those items.

You're right, only 4th Gen. Or 1st Gen Prius Prius as I like to call it. But that's a debate for another day :)

Thank you so much for this post. I have also been looking for good deal for donut spare for my 2020 Prime but having very little luck. All my local tire shops don't want to mount tire to donut spare because they said they don't have machine for it. Then, when I look for used Prius spare, that doesn't return much results because Priuses don't come with spares. I finally found out that 2019-2022 Corolla uses same spare and that returned some results on eBay but the cheapest I found so far is $199 with free shipping. Any good advice on how to search for better price for used spare for 2020 Prime?

You're probably doing everything I would on searching for better price. Sometimes just persistance and luck get you a better price. I know I did my OP over a year ago. Today, is my option for new higher than the $189 I paid?

No Prime comes with a spare, but several Prius trims have spares. But it's the same as a Corolla spare.

Actually, that's not terrible since shipping ain't cheap. Not great, but not terrible either.

Thanks for reply. I thought no Prius came with spare since 2016. Which year and trim of Prius come with spare that would be compatible with 2020 Prime LE?

The following Gen 4 Prii come with donut spares:
2016-2018 — Trim One, Trim Two (like my wife's car), but not the Trim 2 Eco, Trim Three, Trim Three Touring.
    2019-2022 — LE.

I've had two spares. One at home and one behind driver's seat. Once I had a tire blow out as I entered the freeway so my brother brought the tire from home and replaced it. The second time I was heading to the ER and had a flat so AAA came quickly to replace that flat which couldn't be fixed because of the location of the nail that punctured my tire. I'm on my third spare and never leave home without it.
