It might devalue the car, that's true, but I plan to use it up like my other cars, so that's not much of a concern. The steering is an interesting question, there is enough difference that it might be strange. But no stranger than going the other way. (15's to 17's)

The difference looks like it's 2 to 4 mpg rather than .5 difference, but it's a bit of a guess.

Even if you can get aftermarket 15" rims, do you know how long it will take for you to "pay off" the cost of the 15" rims??? Let's say difference of 2mpg...damn, you would need to drive your Prius 1 million miles before you make up the cost of the 15"rims!!!! :D Yeah, not a wise investment IMO.

Read my post on the previous page (#38)...even at 4 mpg difference (which is NOT the case) from 52 mpg to 48 mpg for example, the fuel cost per mile is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Buying a Medium drink at McDonalds instead of a Large drink will save you more pennies!!! :D

Sit down with pen and paper. Pick a random example: 48 mpg (Prius V) and 52 mpg (Prius II). Calculate how much gas is used by driving 100 miles for example. (Or pick any mile marker you want...12,000 miles for example.)

Actually, he can get the stock 15" rims + tires for next to nothing and make a killing off the factory 17" + tires as they're in high demand. But you're right, pretty dumb to degrade the look of the car over only $75.

Thanks Thai. I've been saying for some time that the MPG hit on the 17" is not even worth talking about. Yet, there are new posts every week asking about it. This should be a sticky.

Hint, hint ... 15" wheels little too small, 17" little too big..

16" wheels just right :D:D (just for III or IV, keep your 17s for V)

    * Many cars in the 130 ish HP range can be had with 16's - Corolla, Civic, Matrix. Off top of my head, I don't know of a car with 130 ish HP that can be bought with 17's ... except Prius :) Not going to look either.

That's why I haven't replaced them yet of course, but it all depends on how high gas gets as to if it'll make any sense.

And after all I'm a Prius owner too and it takes years to pay off the extra I spent on it to get higher gas mileage in the first place, so it wouldn't be something all that new to pay a penalty to get better gas mileage...

It's money well spent because any other hybrid is inferior to a Prius :p

Ok, let's lay the foundation on Prius wheels here ...

the 2nd generation 04 - 09 US Prius came with
15" x 6" wheels on the base model and
    16" x 6" wheels on the Touring

the 3rd generation 2010+ Prius in US comes with

15" x 6" wheels on trims II - IV and
    17" x 7" wheels on trim V

What is Toyota waiting for to produce a 16" x 6.5" wheel for 3rd gen Prius? Maybe they would have to retune the suspension for such a wheel and tire.

16" x 6.5" wheel is standard on midrange Corolla and Matrix models, ~ 140 HP
16" x 6.5" wheel is standard on midrange Civic models, 140 HP

Would this size wheel / tire not look great on any Prius?

    Civic 16" wheel / 55 series tire
    gal_lg10.jpg gal_lg19.jpg

How did we end up with 200 HP Civic Si wheels and tire sizes on a 134 HP 3rd gen Prius V?

2012 Honda Civic Si Sedan - Specifications - Official Honda Website

Why do we end up with optional wheels on a 158 HP 2.4L Matrix S on Prius V?

    Toyota Matrix Performance & Specs

Looks like a case of Toyota jumping right over the obvious.

And as a few others have mentioned Prius does look a little downtrodden with its 15's and plastic wheelcovers. Can't say I like the bare 15's either.

Would be nice if Toyota makes this Prius a little more whole and not force buyers into a V to get a sharper set of OEM wheels at delivery.

Does it have to do with LRR tire size availability?? I am sure that Toyota engineers researched this extensively...remember, tire sizes are very important in a hybrid vehicle. I doubt that Toyota engineers just blew this part of the design....

    See post above.

Found only two 16" x 6.5" aftermarket wheels of 63 for Prius on tirerack.com and they are less than $100 each, so I'd be skeptical of quality since many wheels are more like $150+ and OEM wheels are closer to $200 each. There's lots of !6" x 7" which add more weight.

So, it's because of the solar roof option that we are punked out of getting a the best size wheel for the III and/or IV.

picture of wheels on car doesn't copy correctly, just shows original wheels.

Bridgestone Ecopia EP100s are shown available in 205/55-16 , the size for 16x6.5's. But they are $18 more per tire ($104) than 15's.

None of the OEM 17" tires are LRR, but that's a good point regarding sticking to 15" for the lower trims.

Someone once asked me "What are 17" wheels doing on a Prius?" so apparently there are people who didn't think it makes any sense to go larger than 15".

There are LRR tires installed by Toyota on the V/Fives with the 17 inch wheels. The two OE tires installed are the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 which are LRR, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...a&autoYear=2011&autoModel=Prius&autoModClar=V

Or the tires I have on mine the non LRR Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...a&autoYear=2011&autoModel=Prius&autoModClar=V

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...a&autoYear=2011&autoModel=Prius&autoModClar=V

The 2010 in was looking at first had the Michelins on it I was should have asked them to switch the wheels.

    A HUGE +1 !!!

my car came with the crappy 15" and plastic wheelcovers, I picked up a set of the 17" wheels and tires (with about 500 miles on them) for $800, then sold my 15s for $200.

Assuming the Nissan Leaf must need hyper efficiency everywhere, including its wheels and tires, wonder why it is ok for the Leaf to have 16" rims with the 205/55-16 tires while the Prius somehow must have 15" wheels? Because of the solar roof?

    taken from Nissan USA -

And it looks good in them too.

I guess that's cool, except I saw an online OEM wheel site that listed the 2010 Prius 15" wheels for $200 each new. The 17's were $300 each on that site. You only lost out $200 according to these prices.
