Our 2010 Liftback got the dreaded 'knock on cold start'.

    12 seconds if I don't take it out of Park. Maybe 5 in "R" or "D". It's possible somehow to get into "N" without entering READY mode, which is useful for short downhill moves, but not helpful against the startup knock issue.

    About 3 seconds until I panicked and shut it off. Then I tried again and got a couple more seconds of shake-&-rattle before it suddenly reverted to normal. Has not recurred, except maybe once briefly.

    I don't think my "grace period" varies, dependent on gear. My typical scenario is to turn it on and very quickly go to reverse, to back it out of garage into driveway. Counting in my head from the moment I turn it on, I've got a reliable 10~12 seconds, know it'll kick in around 15 seconds.

    That shift to neutral is a good one though, allows you infinite time extension.
