Just to be clear, I am not saying nuclear plants is worse than coal plants. Both are not desirable to me. Maybe one is worse than another depending on who you ask. One thing that is clear is that none of your quoted statistics have any meaning to people who are directly affected by the "incidents" in Fukushima. It's a personal matter for them which no one can deny.

It is also a personal matter to those that can't go back to their homes because of the coal ash spill.

    Coal is simply worse.

Nuclear isn't ideal, but it is better than using coal while waiting for renewables and energy storage.

Well, in my region, coal is only 2.4% of the mix. I am more worried about 30.4% nuclear in our mix and glad to find out that they are on their way out.

What will be the baseload provider? Natural gas?

I would think so, being 50% of the mix.

What will provide peaking capacity? More gas?

I guess gas, but maybe some oil in winter peaks? However, no NE state has gas, oil or coal reserve and production.

How do you feel about seafood? The local woods and streams have likely felt to effects of acid rain. Much of the air pollution in New Jersey is from Ohio.

Things can get bad with an accident at a nuclear plant, but coal plants have impacts far outside their locality that is just part of day to day operations before we even consider carbon emissions.

Natural gas is cleaner than coal, though it does spew GHG and some other emissions into the air. Maybe the safest of the three, but you don't just walk pipeline explosions off.

Nuclear is like flying. It is the safest way to travel, but people remember the times a plane crashes. They aren't even aware of the hundreds of car crashes that happen in the area they drive.

I completely agree with you. But there is nothing I can do for the coal plants in China spewing air pollution into global atmosphere, just like I have very little power to stop the operation of a few remaining nuclear power plants in our area. I am just glad that they are on it's way out for economic reasons. I hope similar economic power will force the closure of remaining coal plants in the US as well. That's all I can do. Wish for the better.

Traditional Nuclear is on its it's way out becouse they developed fast nuclear reactors that will in stages deradiate nuclear waste creating electricity.

Who is "they"? And where are "they" operating these reactors?

I only know becouse I'm an Uber driver living close to Kennedy space center and gave a ride to one of the nuclear scientists that developed the new nuclear battery for up comming satilights. He was telling me about the new fast reactors that will do this.

You must be referring to this generator launched in 2011 - note that NASA has previously used nuclear power in the form of thermoelectric devices on 26 missions over the last 50 years, so this is hardly new technology.
