owned prius 1 year- my average MPG is around 34 :(

It's not very cold here in the winter, but I often drive with (ahem) somewhat less concern for fuel economy that I ought to. My mileage is 43.something over the life of the car.

It's those Scion wheels that are causing the problem, I think. Check other threads; they're great looking but have been found to be rather heavy in comparison to stock. Do you know how much each tire/wheel weighs? Your skins might not be helping, either!

I cover about 5,500 miles yearly. I'd think all those short trips to the train station would reduce my mileage, if anything.

So when you were backing out of the driveway, the speedo said 0 mph? A change of 1" out of 30" is ~3%, a 5 mph difference at ~150 mph.
