Hi. I'll try to make this short. I know armchair mechanics has limits.

Anyway, had a hybrid battery put in by the dealership 13 months ago and 12k miles later I sold the car.

250 miles in, red triangle of death and a code that supposedly means it needs a new battery. I had told the buyer it had a fairly new battery and now feel bad about it. Dealership says warranty will not cover it for someone else. So there's that.

I'm here just seeing if anyone has had any luck with this. We cleared the code and it didn't come back in the next 20 miles. But I'm sure there was a reason it came on in the first place.

    Thanks

Is that a new OEM battery ?
What was the code before you cleared it ?

How are you reading the codes ?

Was the HV battery fan cleaned/serviced when the HV battery was replaced?

Assuming it was a new battery. likely the sensor has failed in some way.
Could have simply been bumped out of place and fallen into the wrong place.
Could have rodents or insect damage.
Will probably need to open it to properly assess.

If it was a NEW battery done at the dealership, there is probably a 3 year warranty on it, so I wouldn't mess with it and just bring it into the dealer. You don't want to accidentally void the warranty.

Also, please report the results here when you find out the solution.
It will really help the community.

They won’t cover the warranty for someone else? Is this a Toyota dealer?

If it is not under warranty then if you want to have a go at this yourself gather up the tool and let's dive in.

You can get your own diagnostic tool to check the probes and get the error code data
    - Android phone/tablet that can access wifi (~$30)
    - ELM 327 Bluetooth OBDII adaptor (~$20)
    - Torque Pro app. (Paid version. ~$6)

Set it up to read battery temp probes.

    Scan for error codes.

After looking at the data, open up the back of the car and remove the pack.

Look under the modules inside the case and see if any of the temp probes are dislodged or laying in the bottom. Usually it is the one farthest from the computer that gets knocked loose.

Check the connectors at the computer end of the pack. Are they fully seated?

If more exploration beyond this is needed then you'll likely need to start separating the modules from the case. You could do some actual testing on the probe's connector first

Reman battery put in by Toyota dealership. Not sure if they clean the fan but they do charge $4,200.

Regular code reader. I don't have anything prius specific. The code was p0a9c.

They said no. It has been slightly over a year and it was a reman they said. It was also actually changed back in 2015 and warranty changed December of 17. I didn't want to muddle the post with too many details. But another issue is the dealership that did it is 2 hours away.

The reman part is kind of important information. They only warranty new factory parts. Where did you get the remanufactured battery from?

Toyota did a very limited run of their own reman batteries.

I tried to buy one but the order never filled.

It you take the plastic/ fabric rear deck piece off the top of the pack, you should be able to take a pic of the the part number tag.

Post it when you get a chance.

If it is a Toyota refurbished battery I am very interested in seeing more pics of the internal.
It would be a very rare item.

In any case , to check on the temp sensor you'll want to open it up. Pllent of YouTube videos out there to get you started.

Of you have questions once you get to the exposed pack post more on this thread. Or feel free to call me at 608-729-4082.

It may be a very simple fix once you are in there.

Hi. So this code just came back up. Cleared it again but it seems very intermittent.
