I just purchased a used 2005 Prius with 109K miles. It would not pass inspection because the parking brake light stayed illuminated after the parking brake pedal was released. Turns out this is an issue with 2004-2007 models (TSB BR002-07). I had to pay $700 to get the parking brake control pedal assembly replaced. :yuck: It involved removing the dashboard. I was curious if anyone else has had this problem.

Doesn't the dealer have some kind of warranty or did you buy from a private party?

    Hey, 2009Prius,

I think beach1957 bought his Prius from a private party because he had to get his own inspection done. Most dealers (be they new car or used car) will have the inspection already done or will guarantee that the car will pass or they will buy it back or pay for the repair (at least in my experience).

I purchased the car from a private owner. This issue came up during the pre-sale inspection. I agreed to pay for it.

Here is info on the TSB for this problem:

    TSB BR002-07

Some 2004 – 2007 model year Prius vehicle customers may complain that the Parking Brake Warning Light stays illuminated after the parking brake pedal is released. The parking brake assembly, which includes the parking brake switch, has been modified to correct this condition. Use the following repair procedure to remove and replace the parking brake pedal assembly.
(Includes 2004 – 2007 model year Prius vehicles produced BEFORE the production change effective on VINs JTDKB20U#73249043 thru JTDKB20U#77632091.)

    Repair Procedure

    1. Confirm the customer’s complaint that the Parking Brake Warning Light stays illuminated after the parking brake pedal is released.
    2. Check to see if the parking brake switch is loose and/or the plastic guide pin for the parking brake switch is broken. This can cause the switch to swivel out of position and NO longer make contact with the parking lever to engage the parking brake switch and open the circuit.
    3. Replace the parking brake pedal assembly if the condition in step 2 is found. Refer to the repair manual for the procedures for “Parking Brake Control Pedal Assembly: Overhaul.â€
