I should have said that whatever other life forms might be out there would be better off if we never reach them. You are of course right that the universe does not care.

The distances involved would preclude colonization of other star systems from benefitting us. They could neither provide us with resources, nor be an escape for enough of us as to relieve population pressure. But a small number of us seeding other planets with our uncontrolled proliferation and the destruction we wreak upon our place of residence, and the hatred, wars, and petty greed we carry as our inevitable baggage, would be a very bad thing for any native life that may already be there.

Of the two, I'd say global warming is the more serious. Peak oil is merely a price adjustment, effectively dragging us kicking and screaming to face reality. Global warming has dire consequences for all of life. For those of you who think it's a myth, stop playing with those deck chairs and start bailing.

actually the US will only destroy the world creating a wasteful lifestyle that would be envied around the world.

as far as global warming, china and india will do most of the destruction. that is why its paramount that we create a solution and implement it before its too late. china increased its energy usage 150% in past 7 years and that rate is expected to accelerate exponentially.

sure they have a few green projects going. (they have the largest, by FAR, hydroelectric project) but they also have a BUNCH of coal fired plants in the works as well.
