Suicide by falling car that "breaks the law of gravity." Ironic.

I would say "thinning the herd" but I guess technically it's flattening.

    Sucks to be them.

How long until their next of kin gets the idea to claim on the car owner's insurance for creating an attractive nuisance? I write that half-jokingly.

But then to try to soothe the cars insurance that you're stealing the cat off of that you set the jack under without stands or precautions I'm pretty pretty moot case it seems like no one did anything to help prevent the death by lifting of something that weighs 5,000 lb and no safety certainly can't be on the cars insurance to cover or the person's insurance on the car to cover.

When one lifts a car with a hydraulic floor jack without placing safety stands, he or she is depending on a China made two cent rubber "o" ring.

Like I wrote, I was half-joking...but there are no shortage of ambulance-chasing lawyers out there. People get sued all the time for things that aren't their fault

Car owner who left Jeep at dealership gets sued after worker dies during oil change

Any lawsuit can be filed. How many of these actually won?

They kinda bypassed the jack it up system by going after Tundra trucks and the like. Don't need a jack just scoot under and start cutting.
Few years ago when this was at its peak a local Toyota dealer got hit at night for about 60 cats all Tundra trucks. Cheapskates had no security guard just cameras. Like cameras will stop these dudes.
Bet they got security guards now.....

I bet thieves bypass the fence in short order.

The simplest method would be to bump the car off of the pads with another vehicle. That would only work if they could get in front of or behind it.

Failing that, they could fit a small jack between the fence and the vehicle (at least the one in the picture in the linked article), lift one side, and pull the fence out again.

They could cut the two horizontal rails right behind the front wheel, and then using that long lever arm, pivot the whole fence out of the way.

Worst scenario - they jack up the car at the front, using any random solid part of the vehicle, then crawl under with a second jack and raise the vehicle using a proper jack point. Or, as in the previous method, use the long lever arm and just swing the fence out of the way. Whether or not they get the cat this will damage whatever they used as the first jack point. It isn't like the thieves care how much damage they do...

Any investigator with a little incentive could shut down this whole cat theft thing in a week. Track the cats to whoever buys the platinum and have them charged with a Federal crime. Require valid ID and records for all platinum sales.

At least one of these operations was found to be tossing all the parts in a container headed overseas. Well beyond even federal law enforcement. And you could bet anything that nobody on the receiving end knew what a VIN was or cared why they were etched onto some of the parts.

Follow tracking devices on a few cats and start arresting the people whose hands they pass through before the ship leaves port.
