Hello everyone, My 2006 Prius with 106,000 miles on it is in need of a replacement battery. Based on what I have read so far(Thanks for sharing so much of your knowledge), It looks like a new battery from the dealer is the best option for me($2,600) given my willingness to mess around with the battery over time. The only thing I really couldn't get a sense of, are peoples experiences after installing an OEM battery from Toyota. I would rather install it myself than pay for it to be installed for me($3,400), the only reason I would consider having it done at the dealership is the 3 year warranty vs the 1 year for the DIY install. Given that I don't see any threads about how a replacement has failed within the 3 years this seems like the best option.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

If you would rather install the battery yourself anyway, you only get a 1 year warranty from Toyota.

If you are in the continental US, a better option would be the kit of new cwlls from @2ktToaster for $1600 shipped. He works with batteries for a living, so he developed this quality kit that has been tested by several users & experts here. I know @ericbecky is mored with hs testing of this stable alternative.

You should be able to get a better deal on the battery from your Toyota dealer. A Toyota dealer by Philly has an online parts website, they list the batter marked down to $1699.70 http://www.conicellitoyotaofconshohocken.com/auto-parts

    Are there symptoms, codes?

$2600 for the part only (with one year warranty), or $3400 for professionally installed (with three year warranty)? An $800 difference, say $300 for the install and $500 for the greater warranty.

Also, unspoken, but definitely a factor for me: if you go with professional install, there will be no quibble if there's any fit issues, and no finger pointing if and when the new battery were to develop problems.

I'd be inclined to go with the professionally installed battery. The only thing, I would comparison-shop installed price, if there are other dealerships in your area. And let the first dealership know this, they might come down a bit just on that news.

In my area Toyota just reduced the retail price of the pack by approx $400. If the quote you got was prior to January 1st you may want to check again.

i would do it myself, these batteries rarely die within 3 years, if ever.

There is a presumption the local dealers will sell the battery over the counter. The new battery will need "some assembly required" and the old core properly packaged for the return of the core charge.

Thanks for the reply's, The quote was from the 5th so looks like a no go there, I'm going to order tomorrow and attempt to repair on Wednesday. Anything I should do while I have everything stripped down? clean fan ect?

Also codes should disappear after the swap correct? they don't need to be manually cleared? probably a stupid question but better safe than sorry.

olathe toyota is selling for $1,650. but they won't ship.
you have to swap over the pc boards and etc.
definitely clean the fan. not sure about the codes, disconnecting the 12v might be enough. if not, auto zone or someone will do it for free.
pay careful attention to removing the orange safety plug, most folks miss the first step (last step when replacing) and the car won't start.
    all the best!(y)

    Bigger issue is rebuilders.
Too many questionable rebuilders likely affecting the Toyota brand. As well as hybrids in general for that matter.

Going to take a break see any problems?

I'm assuming since the top sensor was on the replacement already the bottom ones are as well?

    You are missing some parts.
I hope you still have your core, or at least the needed parts.

The black plastic piece that goes on top of the white battery module end cap nearest the computers.

The new foam pieces that attach on the sides of the white battery module end cap nearest the computers.

Did you use all 6 of the new nuts?
Are they all properly torqued with a torque wrench?

The white hard plastic tube on the end farthest away from the computers appears to be upside down. Unless it is just an optical illusion.

Did you keep the metal endcap that was attached to the old cover? You need that encapsulate and the whiteish clip and the bolt that holds it in place.

This is why you pay the core fee and do not surrender your core until you are sure you have everything.

The old core should have had the rubber mats put on top of it before affixing the cover.

Also wrap the harnesses of the old battery with plastic bag and tape.

Attach the car's Vin, year, and odometer reading to the old core.

Be sure to use the new Toyota-provided positive and negative cables as well as fuse holder.

Not sure what black plastic piece you are talking about, edit fixed.

Used foam after break and used new nuts,

    Fixed the white tube,

    Put on endcap

Perhaps you did not insert the orange plug properly.

    3 step process.
    Insert into pack.
    Swing handle upwards.
Push handle straight downward until it clicks.

Assuming you're installing it with the cover off, to save some time if it doesn't work, check the little metal piece that goes over the HV terminals as it transitions from battery wires to car-wires. Without that, the car can detect all sorts of failures like HV isolation or leakage problems.
