    When we first lived in New Jersey our apartment complex was across the street from the Colonial pipeline terminal...not sure if that's the north end or not. Guess that helps to explain NJ's low prices, got a little bit o TX coming in.

    If it has an effect, we should be able to track it here: East Coast (PADD 1) Gasoline and Diesel Retail Prices

    Just I remember the California refinery 'maintenance' and the effect on their prices.

    The only reason I learned about it was from the local, morning news.

    Colonial's pipeline is the main source of fuel from Gulf Coast refineries to the east coast, delivering about 40 percent of needed supplies. Colonial said the first states that will be impacted by disruptions in supply will be Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

    'Red alert' and higher prices

    The combination of lack of supply and increased transportation costs means drivers along the east coast will be paying more for gasoline.

    Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at for price-tracking site GasBuddy.com, said prices could rise anywhere between 5 to 20 cents per gallon.

    "Some stations may run out," DeHaan said, adding a run at pumps in Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia will "likely compound the problem," making gas prices higher and leading to less availability.

    On Friday morning, DeHaan noted on social media the increase has already hit North Carolina, which is up 1.4 cents per gallon overnight, South Carolina (1.3 cent increase) and Tennessee (1.1 cent increase.)

    article on cnn. sounds like the situation is up in the air and they're preparing for the worst. and the worst may be the environmental disaster. another vote for oil.

    Up 2 cents today between the time I left and the time I came back. To a shocking $1.939. Also noticed more tankers on the road.

    Yawn at 42+ MPG. Now at single digits MPG it might be another story.

    The market goes up and down.

    Wait? The company you get your bread is running on electrons? You getting your food from farmers running on electrons? You get your Chinese goods from electric cargo ships?

    You are affected even if you don't touch it. Unlike gas prices, those other things' prices usually will never go back down.

    Over on the TDI site, they're saying the pipeline has a parallel diesel line that's being used for gas. Around here, according to GasBuddy, the prices are lower, if not the same.

    Last time I filled up my Chevy Volt was a few months ago. Until cold weather gets here, or I take a long distance trip, I probably won't need to fill up again for a few months.

    You'd think the oil companies would be required to have better flow monitoring and regular maintenance done to prevent disastrous leaks like this.I read on another article that about 250k gallons of gas spilled before they realized it and were able to shut off the line.

    This makes me very sympathetic to the native Americans who are trying to block an oil pipeline being built across their tribal lands.

    The Bayway refinery in Linden/Elizabeth. That and the refinery in Paulsboro are what's left. From what I can find, the refineries that closed down are being used for storage and blending only.

    Unfortunately, the other modes for bulk transport (truck, train, barge) for these fuels have higher human mortality rates. We need to keep using pipelines somewhere.

    (Don't take this as a defense of existing pipeline regulation and placement.)

    Re: the map ...the thing I noticed (looking also at a more detailed map of the pipeline) was that there are no pipeline take-offs in northern Virginia, whereas Virginia Beach area and MD gets a pipeline branch. So maybe helps me explain why NoVA gaso is more expensive and VA Beach is less expensive, even though VA beach and NoVA both use the same more expensive reformulated gaso and we both have the same extra 2% regional gas taxes added on.

    (whereas NoVa is in the yellow-orange more expensive zone and VA Beach is in the cheapo green. MD has higher gaso tax now so they are more yellow.)
