the little microswitch is part of the process, if you can find a way to test it.
when the clip is lifted upon inserting, then closes after inserted, the charge light comes on.
if you hold the switch open with the thumb lever, the light will shut off, and after so many seconds, closing it again won't work, you have to remove and reinsert the plug.
it is somehow integral to the handshake, but i have no idea in what way.

Well I bought another charging cable on eBay and it just sits at "waiting..." And does not charge the car. I checked a two different outlets at my house. I am currently sitting at a charge point and my car is charging. The yellow plug-in light came on as soon as I pligged in. So either I have two bad chargers...

The lights on the charger mean something, if you plug it into your outlet and it stays yellow the outlet usually is bad.

Your house might have inadequate grounding

And yes 2 bad chargers if you bought a used one is possible

Do both your chargers hang up in the same way?

Is it your cord getting hung up or is the car ready light hanging up?

AlSO worth noting GM used to provide an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty that included the EVSE, not sure of ages miles but could ping Toyota corporate if they would do a good will, of coarse the OEM cord and car would need to be submitted to the dealer.

wow, what are the odds that it wasn't the evse. anywhere besides your house you can plug in?

even that's a long shot it seems. is the new evse new, or used?

If he has a friend with a l1 EVSE and a plug in car he should drive over and test his car on his friends equipment and his friends car with his equipment and do some horse trading to see the if anything of his works and if his friends stuff works at his house.

In my area the 150 year old homes are known to just have a ground hung off the water pipes and fail the ground fault resistance tests.

I've been charging it just fine for over 3 years with this dedicated outlet. I have tried 2 others at the house and it isn't charging. This weekend I am taking the car to a friend's house to plug it in there to see what happens.

It was used but it appears to work. Trying both of them at a completely different location this weekend just to see but what are the odds that 3 outlets in my house suddenly have gone bad?

That's just it- the GFCI works, the 2nd GFCI works, the 3rd outlet I tried is just a standard 3 prong. All of them appear to have proper ground based on my ground tester. All have proper voltage. And the outlet has been working for years.

I’ve had poor luck using EVSEs in GFCI outlets, my Voltec simply wouldn’t work and would error out plugged in one.

Time to find a friend with an EV, an accessible outlet and a 110vac EVSE

If it works there you know the problem
If it works on his car but not yours, you know the problem

Without further testing you won’t be able to coax out the problem

Just tried both granny chargers at a friend's house and same issue- no light, not charging.

I have changed the port already. And it charges at a Chargepoint so it's got to be something else.

i wonder if there is something inside the car not recognizing an L1 evse. seems highly unlikely though

    2 bad L1 EVSEs?

Would need to test your cord on someone else’s car or go to an OEM dealership for a $$$$ + $$$$ diagnostic of your cords and car

Just a quick update- bought another 2013 for the wife- this one is blue- and gave the old one to the kid. Now we have two Prii but one charging cable. I have 2 granny chargers, one after market and one Toyota, that don't have power past the brick. So if anyone has any idea how to repair them that would be swell. Or if anyone needs some cable or plugs or anything I have parts. Also have a charging port for a prius plug-in hybrid going on ebay if anyone needs one.
