    I drive a car that gets 24 mpg combined. The increase in insurance costs alone (around $21 /month) for increased coverage wouldn't offset the savings in gas, let alone the purchase price. It's important to do the math before you jump in feet first. For my wife, the Prius was a home run based upon her miles driven, but it will still take half a decade to break even.

    you must not drive very many miles per year, at 14000 miles a year I'm saving $1500 a year over my last 20 mpg car.
