I just purchased myself an ex-fleet 04prius and was dissapointed to see a couple of features lacking.

    - First was the smartkey. Mine has no transponder. I have to insert this into the console to start.

    - Second was navigation

Is it possible to retrofit either of these two items into a Prius?

Short answer: No it is not economically viable.

Long answer: Sure it is possible you could buy all the parts and have them installed, but it would be cheaper just to buy a Prius with all the stuff in it.

You can always buy an after market Nav and have half your problem solved, but I'm sure you know that.

There are aftermarket options to install a smart-entry feature. I've seen someone with an 01-03 Prius have that smart-entry feature. You just need a car and a reader installed in the doors. Do a search on smart entry. I'm sure you can find what you need.

I've seen doors with a fingerprint scanner, combination and there used to be one that operated with the Homelink, but none like the SKS. :(

makes me wonder why garage door openers cannot recognize the car when it pulls up without having to hit a button first

I suspect that it's not practical to retrofit an SKS system into a base-model Prius. However, I am very happy with my Garmin StreetPilot 2720 GPS. It has the advantage of sitting where I can see it more easily than the car's screen, and the advantage that I can be using the car's screen for its own displays, or for the CAN-View display, and still use my GPS. And based solely on the number of complaints people have posted about the OEM NAV, I think the Garmin may be a better unit, at a fraction of the price.

I have some info if you're interested in this topic, but I decided we should move the discussion to an appropriate forum . . . . here
