    hi there. i have a zvw30,
my car makes clunking noise when going uneven road... annoying,..
i changed my stabilizer link, balljoint and outer tie rod.
the link is shot, the balljoint is loose and the tie rod is shot...
but the clunking noise persist.. (lessen now)

brought to the dealer, the mechanic immediatley, moves the steering wheel left and right, sure enough theres was a 'thud' sound when going left or right.
he said needs to replace the whole steering rack.
i know theres after market inner tie rod.. he just kept quiet..." no u need to replace the whole rack and pinion"

then i asked again. how about bushings? i assume like most cars there are 4 pieces of bushing that hold the steering rack in place.

he said "no bushings, need to replace the whole steering rack"

frustrated , i was hoping he offered to lift the car and inspect it more carefully, but he didnt.

    so i was wondering

are there any bushings that holds the steering rack in place?

    thanks all.

Please re-check the number 4 in below picture. I used to have the problem same as you. In 4, there are the steering grease inside. when the time was passed, grease has been lost out. Re-insert grease, I was done by toyota dealer in my country(Thailand). Cost is $20 included labor cost.

If you don't need to pay anymore. please see in below youtube link.

I hope this is useful with your problem.

wow. thank you for the reply. I hope this could be an easy fix. do you know ho to get access to the intermediate shaft? is it right underneath the steering wheel inside the cabin? or is it underneath the car?
    thank you.

His location is underneath the steering, near by your right leg during drive.
