I have just under 15K miles on my 2016. My wife got a message about the precollision system. When I got to see the car there was a flashing display light showing two cars crashing and the notation "off". I looked stuff up in the manual and was directed to the settings and found that crashed car icon with the ability to turn precollision on/off. When I tried to turn it ON, it gave me a warning message: "Precollision Unavailable".

Of course, I am taking it in for service to see what's up but I thought I might as well get whatever information I can from the gurus here.

Any thoughts? (Oh, and just three days ago I had it in for the 15K miles service so I suppose they could have broken the car when they did that.)

Give the front Toyota logo a gentle cleaning. I'll assume you haven't modified or covered it with anything.

Does DRCC work and report "RADAR READY" or does it report a malfunction, too?

I may be preaching to the choir here, so forgive me if you already know how.
To turn on DRCC you have to press the button on the end of the stalk and a message come up on the top screen. Once you have reached the required speed drops the stalk down to activate DRCC, the screen gives another message and an image of a grey car between converging lines. There's also a yellow indicator to the right of the dash.

This is definitely a poser, so please keep us informed as to progress. We all hope it's something really resolve, if only by the dealer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll not be able to get to it until Friday, and then I have an early morning appointment with the dealer. As to cleaning it, that sounds promising, except that it has been raining and I would think that the rain would clean it a bit. I took the car in for service about three days or so before the problem popped up and I had the car washed at that time. If the dirt from two days freeway driving can disable the system, I think we have a real problem.

However, a new symptom: it is now intermittent. (Arrrrg, I can hear the dealer now "Bring it back when it does not work!" I hate it when they try that. But so far my dealer, Jim Coleman in Bethesda, MD has been excellent.) My wife said it was off for two days (she kept the message on the display all that time) and about two miles from home yesterday, it started working again. This is aggravating. I consider this a serious safety issue as it is part of an automatic system that intercedes in the driver controlling the car. All I need is for the car to feel it has to take over for some reason. Not acceptable. I'll let you know what the dealer says, but I don't hold out much hope.

Oh, and the manual talks about temperature extremes causing problems. The temperatures here have been well within the normal range. Lows in the high 30's and highs in the low 50's.

Let's hope some loose nuts do not run in front of the car until it gets repaired. :D

So I had a big cardboard box I was about to throw out. Decided to test my daughter's precollision system in her Prius. Only got to about 20mph and than BAM!, I hit the box. Is there a minimum speed that it activates?

The precollision system in our Prii is radar-based. Cardboard is invisible to the radar.

My Wife's Subaru Crosstrek uses 3-D vision and would "see" a cardboard box.

Is the pre collision system active even when the DRCC is turned off? And when the LKA is turned off?

Yes. It may use the same components as DRCC/LDW but it's an independent system.

    Call the geek squad!

I wonder if there's a market for Prius tutors here in the Bay Area?
