'predictive deceleration' anyone?

Recently @john1701a and I were discussing some unusual braking behavior so I check out "New Car Features" (1.) and found:

Displays an icon indicating the position in which the predictive deceleration assist of the predictive efficient drive function can operate (completed accumulative deceleration and stop position) when the map scale is 800 m or less. If the vehicle approaches the predictive deceleration assist position on the road while driving, the icon design changes to stand out.*6

*5: Predictive efficient drive function is available in the contiguous United States, D.C.

*6: As the accumulated data required for the predictive deceleration assist is reset when the map data is updated, the predictive deceleration assist position is not displayed until the data accumulation is completed again.

    Has anyone seen this?

The reason I ask is "the accumulated data required for predictive deceleration". Recently retired, my driving lacks the regularity of commuting to and from a job. I just get in the car and drive to where my fancy takes me and there are at least two ways to drive home. Another factor, road construction has torn up the usual, shortest route in and out of the neighborhood. So I'm not a good candidate for 'predictive deceleration.'

Perhaps a picture of what the map shows and how to bring it up?

Still waiting on mine to show up, but I'm very interested to see this as well. Perhaps you need to make a couple of trips to the hardware store and see what pops up on the second or third trip. (y) They don't say there is a minimum distance, just that the route needs to already be in the traveled "daily" database. It might have to span more than one 24 hr period to count.

I found a differently worded note about this here.

"The Prius Prime can even optimize range by memorizing the driver’s stopping patterns on frequently driven routes and suggesting when to let off the accelerator. Available Predictive Efficient Drive with Predictive Deceleration Support collects daily driving data to predict points of deceleration and stopping. From then on, when the driver goes through a location in the database, the system indicates when to let off the accelerator and can apply assisted deceleration to help boost fuel efficiency."

Seen the icon change? I think so, but I'm not certain. I think it gets larger.

I've certainly seen the behavior and the Hybrid System Indicator change. I'm less certain about the icon.

I think that's the little leaf that shows up on the navigation screen. If you turn the option on, little green leaves pop up around areas you usually slow down at.
Like I stop at a stop sign before going up a steep hill. There's a leaf at the bottom of the hill. I have never noticed the car acting different though.

The deceleration becomes obvious after awhile. I noticed the pronounced regen in my neighborhood at the routine stops. With the roundabouts, I usually don't even need to touch the brake pedal anymore.

This is a great feature! I really like it. Also, notice the green dot and its proximity to the intersection. Sometimes it is a challenge to get a green dot. There must be some sort of breaking language that generates these points.

Speculation on my part but I'm wondering if the car is stepping up regeneration when approaching an area that has frequent stops. In effect, a temporary "B" so the car can optimize regeneration.

I can actually see the increase on the screen. The bar dips as if I had started to brake, even though my foot isn't touching either pedal.

Hummm, I was thinking of the 'creep' regeneration BUT I haven't seen it myself to investigate. Sounds like a neat puzzle.

When you approach a known intersection and you are already off the accelerator pedal, the regeneration approximately doubles and the location where it does this seems to be speed dependent (faster is earlier).

It annoyed me at first but I've grown to like it.

How does it work with traffic-light-controlled intersections? It'll work well for 4-way stops and roundabouts but traffic light intersections aren't always red in your direction.

It doesn't do anything unless you're completely off the accelerator pedal.

Right, but you can do that at intersections too as you coast to the light.

    I'm not following.

If you get off the pedal at an unknown intersection you get x-amount of regeneration.
If you get off the pedal at a known intersection, you get something like 2x-amount of regeneration, starting at a distance from the intersection that seems to me to be speed-dependent (faster = starts farther away).

I'm not seeing it my plus. I need to check the navigation manual.

What I mean is will it learn at an intersection that has traffic lights where you don't always come to a stop because you may approach it at a green light.

But I see, based on what you wrote, that PED only occurs if you actually let go of the accelerator so if the intersection with a traffic light is a known intersection, then just stay on the pedal if it's green and you'll be fine. If it's a red light, then you can lift off and get PED regen.

    Did I get that right?

Yes...but it will only learn if you slow down.

    Yes.

Bob, the feature is only in the Advanced and the Premium, according to the technical handout pdf.
