i actually tried to define poor by applying for the internet discount. after about an hour of trying to input personal info, i finally gave up.

Hmmm, our "local" grocery store is full of produce and food from "away". If I have to rely on locally grown food only, I will have no vegetables and fruits for 8 months of the year. Yes, I grow my own vegetables and am more or less self-sufficient for about 4 months of the year.

 

agreed. we belong to a csa year round, and have our own garden, but coast of maine organic cow poop and other costs have skyrocketed too.
there isn't much you can buy local, unfortunately. we try to shop local, but that only supports the businesses, which is at least something these days.

 

I can't image carrying enough cash in my wallet to fill up such a truck even if diesel was just $1/gallon.

 

You could at least start your own compost heap. We have to buy chicken feed and straws, but they turn into beautiful compost in our backyard. I haven't bought bagged soil amendments for a while except for a few bags of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite for making my own blend of potting soil for containers. I also do vermiculture, so no kitchen and garden refuse goes to the landfill.

I can't imagine how much the guys in the lifted diesel pickup trucks are paying...

I'll find out soon though...son is coming back from college in a few days and he's going to go back to working at the 'Kwik Trip' gas station over the summer. He's not looking forward to the bitching...they were starting to do than even before he left for college last August. His coworkers there say it has gotten really bad...

 

I'm not going to sympathize with any price bitching until traffic speeds slow down to the posted speed limit. So far, I've seen no movement in that direction at all. If anything, more people are passing me on residential streets, even as traffic lights turn red.

 

Anyone else notice less traffic?

The busy times are still very busy, but the less-busy times are now eerily empty on the roads near me.

 

and no desire from government to try to slow people down against their will either.

let them keep smashing and crashing. auto injuries and deaths everyday due to speed, aggressive and/or distracted driving. who cares?

not around here, it's whackier than pre covid.i have not seen any data though.
i have noticed there are no two afternoon rush hours though. 3 and 5pm.

And if you owned a big yacht? I've heard of a $20k+ fill up.

Locally traffic appears to have increased, and people are in a HURRY!

BIG BELL requires me to use a tracking device so I’m pretty much at PSL in my little “Hello Kitty” van which is no large sacrifice. On the interstate I simply get behind a bigger, slower truck.
On surface streets I remind myself that I get paid by the hour.
I try to drive courteously and let those in a hurry pass me and I yield the right of way at intersections whenever possible.
This is easily accomplished since very few people in America really know who has the right of way at an uncontrolled intersection, and idiots are always in a hurry.

As always, the real “cost” for gas will probably express itself the same way that it has in the past, meaning that the “change government” lamp will illuminate.

Sooner or later….we might even accidentally pick some people who do not “suck less.”

We have our Primaries coming up on May 17. In our state you only vote for candidates in your parties primary.

I wish you could vote in each parties Primary but I understand the logic with only being allowed to vote in your registered parties Primary.

As I have aged and matured Party affiliation has become less and less important and my vote is dependent on the individual person, their ideals and goals, and if those attributes will make us a better country ( #1 priority) and how they line up with mine (2nd priority). On the local level my vote would depend on how they will improve the local community, I could give - a hoot in hell- about which party they are affiliated with.
