While on the treadmile at the gym this morning, I saw a Prius Prime commercial!! Talked about the rebates available and showed pictures of the Prime in it's sexiest of poses!

Wow, just wow !!! I thought Prime was looked at as the black sheep of Toyota.

Are you sure you were just not suffering from physical exhaustion?

I know! I was blown away! Not only a commercial for a Toyota Hybrid, but, just focusing on the Prime! Not one of those commercials pushing the Corolla and Tundra and oh look! there's a Prime in the background!

Unless "morning" has a different meaning, that isn't prime time with regards to network ad pricing & viewership.

Still nice to see they're promoting the car at all.

You may be correct Leadfoot. It was during 7am to 8am time slot here on the west coast, broadcasted on a morning show program that starts 6am here and 9am east coast. I was just attempting to rhyme "Prime" with "time".

But did the ad also appear on the East Coast? Or even outside a CARB state? I think the answer to those questions is a good way to judge Toyota's seriousness to supporting the technology.

It was similar to this one, but it was all about the Prime model, nothing else

They'll support it up to the point that consumers will buy them. They aren't in the money-losing business. if they see future profits from the technology they developed, they may be willing to eat some losses now. But the pockets are only so deep with corporate accountants.

I say they've got a good shot at successfully repeating what they've done with the cordless Prius: put that powerplant in some cars that don't say Prius on the back! Pluggy RAVs & Camrys would do well, methinks.

I suspect that is where they are heading. When I show people my Prime, they are surprised at the EV range and the fact that you can charge it with the existing receptacle in your garage. Drive it home, plug it in. And, no range anxiety when the EV range is exhausted.

Yep, it's a powerful discovery. I got to see it with a friend's Ford Fusion. Now I'm convinced that I want a PHEV for my next car. The trick for me anyway is finding one. I've got my heart set on a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid, but I still haven't found evidence that any have actually made it into the country. (full disclosure: I want a used 2019 and I don't want to buy it for another year or two.)

While I haven't seen the Prime TV ad, I saw a very impressive ad from Volkswagen a few days ago. It had the music from the old Simon and Garfunkel song "The Sounds of Silence". The basic premise was that they are very sorry for their past transgressions with "dieselgate" and their future is electric vehicles. Almost made me want to go to my local VW dealer and see their new EV van concept, but looks like that might be a couple of years away. Also reminded me how much I still like the old Simon and Garfunkel songs.

Hopefully the vehicle won't play the part of the song that goes "Hello darkness my old friend" when the vehicle runs out of charge.

We've been approached twice in the last two days by curious people drawn to our car while setting up to a freebie charging station. They are mesmerized by the whole shebang from function, styling, efficiency, pricing etc. etc. but are totally blown away when I let them peek at the odometer/mpg figures (latest info shows about 280 miles driven on this tank @ 246 mpg and the gas gauge still shows tippy top full).

Two other very sporty vehicles in our garage are getting cobwebs, as we truly love driving this car!

Today a dog-walking neighbor stopped to chat when I backed out of the garage. They noted the car made no noise, then saw the "Plug In Hybrid" badge on the quarter panel. They were curious and I showed them the car for about 10 minutes. Then at the Home Depot a guy and his wife parked next to me in a Fiat 500e that he bought used from CA for $9,600 plus $1,100 shipping. We had a chat about EV's. He had converted a conventional Prius to plug-in in about 2009.

I told both of them that the biggest challenge of driving this white Prime is fighting off the hot chicks...

I won’t go that far. On nice days the MX-5 is driven and no hypermiling.

I'd like that, but then my rice cooker plays Twinkle Little Star.
