We just used preconditioning for the first time while traveling in Michigan. Now the car won't start or give us any clues.

Well, we plugged it back in, pushed AC button twice to deactivate the preconditioning, then unplugged, and now it started up normally. This might be inferred from the manual as the right way to use the pre-conditioning. It's just not at all clear from the way things are worded in the manual.

Way to go with some great advice.....

The individual has made 1 post in a whole year. It's not that high of a priority on their list of things to get done I assure you.

The car won's start? What did it do when you tried to start it?

You shouldn't have to deactivate pre-conditioning. Just opening any door stops it.
