Prius 2008 with 37 MPG

how many miles?

how long have you owned?

were you getting better mpg's previously?

how are you measuring mpg's?

thanks. start with this: fill the tank, drive until low, refill, divide miles by gallons, and report back with true mpg's.
in the meantime, inflate your tyres to 40f, 38r, and make sure they are low rolling resistance rated. check your oil level, test your 12v battery, check your air filter, clean your hv battery cooling fan and make sure the vent on the rear seat isn't blocked.

i now see your other post. this is a salvage car from salt water flooding and you have trouble lights on?

 

I'm not knowledgeable mechanically and I suspect your problems are most likely mechanical but how the car is being driven and used has a lot to do with mileage too. A lot of short drives, hard accelerations, etc. can really affect the gas mileage. Ours has gone as low as 34mpg for a couple of tanks when all we did was drive it for a couple of weeks just on short hops around town for work or shopping. The car needs time to warm up.

 

How many days does it take for you to drive the 300 miles tank?

 

The bad battery is probably the reason for the bad MPG

 

Would that be the 12v Battery or the HV Traction Battery?

I concede that the 12v Battery might have suffered a degree of damage from salt water - though I'd have thought it wouldn't manifest itself via low MPG.

Changing a faulty 12v has been known to make a difference.

Has the owner considered the possibility that the salt water might have affected the bearings on any, or all 4 wheels , resulting in a degree of drag that is contributing to the low MPG figures?

It seems a logical possibility. Other ideas; did the saltwater irretrievably damage the catalyser on the exhaust? Could this result in higher MPG?

Last question; what are the ambient atmospheric temperatures in that area of Jordan from day to day when the vehicle is in use - and come to think of it - is any driving in particularly mountainous regions or on badly surfaced roads with bad traction involved?

Is there a lot of short journey stop start driving involved?

(1) Check your tire pressures. The manufacturer recommendation is 35psi front, 33psi rear but many people on these forums prefers to go up to 42psi front/40psi rear. Personally I go halfway and do 38psi front/36psi rear. In my experience even a few psi can make a big difference in mileage with the Prius. I try to check and adjust at least once a month.

(2) Check the engine air filter. If it's dirty, replace it.

(3) Check your 12v battery. Let the car sit for at least a few hours, then push the power button once without your foot on the gas. Hold down the Info button then, while it's held down, flick your headlights on and off three times. The touchscreen should go into "System Check" mode. Push "Display Check," then "Vehicle Signal Check." This should get you to the screen that shows the battery voltage. with the car in accessory mode (i.e. power button once, no foot on gas) the value should be somewhere around 12v-12.8v. If it's significantly lower than that, you could try to recharge your battery by leaving the car on overnight but you'll very likely need a new 12v to get your car performing correctly.

If you've done all of that and are still getting mileage in the 30's even on reasonably lengthy trips in more moderate temperatures, it's gotta be your driving style and you should consider reading some hypermiling guides to get a better idea of how to drive more efficiently.
