Prius 2010 on PENRITE 0w16

    Hi all,

    Just discovered this nice forum and decided to join, lot of great information here !

    I live in New Caledonia country (french) in the pacific ocean, and I have a Prius 2010 with 28k miles. (registered in 2012).

    Here we can have the PENRITE oil from Australia, decided to give a try as TOYOTA Dealer only put 5w30 Mobil in all toyota cars here...

    So I changed my oil with PENRITE 0w16 hybrid ENVIRO+ and after 1 tank, difference at the pump was 0.4L/100kms over 5w30, 4.6L/100kms to 4.2L/100 kms (51 to 56mpg), same house/job trips, same outside t°, same driving.

    Let's take 0.3L difference with error margin, that's 6% solid gain from 5w30 to 0w16. However due to the local price of the oil compared to 5w30, I have to do 7800kms (4875 miles) to start doing some $$$ savings....lol. Just before next oil drain !

    I can't say it's smoother when ice kicks in even if it seems to be, cause it's purely placebo at 99%.

    If you can have this oil at same price than 5w30, sure it would be nice for savings, however it's not the case in my country....

    I've had larger differences in consumption than 0.4 l/100 km without changing anything. So I hope you don't mind if I don't see this as very reliable data.

    Without real testing protocol, of course it can't be 100% accurate, however my fuel mileage was stable at 4.6L/100 on trip B from last tank and now it stabilizes itself at 4.2L/100 on trip A at 700kms on 0w16 (making trip B fuel consumption going down too). Anybody can makes its own judgment on this difference, but for the moment it matches the advertised & tested 5% fuel savings of 0w16 over 5w30. that's all.

    So is Prius a popular car in your country? If I read this correctly you bought a 2 year old NEW car? Its a pretty small island, 28K miles is a lot of driving around in circles!

    Not popular AT ALL. Here it's pickups and 4x4 everywhere...I bought it second hand one year ago with only 18k miles at 12k$ usd. Nobody want to buy these cars here so price is low. And yes our Island is very small and not very flat, we usually don't put a lot of miles on our cars. But petrol here is 1,2$/Liter so driving a Prius is very good for savings on fuel...and my other car is a e39 M5 BMW so...good compensation ! Lol

    BTW: you keep mentioning 0W16. I assume it is 0W15? Never heard of 0W16 being marketed.

    I've never heard of 0W15 being marketed !

    Ow-16 is a new oil that more then likely will replace 0w-20 in the USA in the next few years. This is all do to CAFE needs.

    I somehow had it in my mind that Toyota prescribes 0W15 for the Prius, but it is 0W20. And seeing that 0W16 is of higher spec and not required by Toyota, why not use 0W20? I would imagine that 0W16 is more expensive.

    I don't have 0w20 available in my country too...even at Toyota...and 0w16 was roughly the same price to import so....

    4.0L/100 with some hypermiling techniques and a bit of aircon....never managed to get that low before. Very satisfied !

    I have used Ravenol 0W16 and Citgo 0W16 for over 100k miles.

    The big difference is performance. The car is peppier.

    There is minimal MPG difference vs Toyota Genuine 0W20.

    Also the numbers regarding wear, oxidative thickening and fuel dilution, were all quite similar to Toyota Genuine 0W20.

    I currently use the Citgo 0W16 for 10k mile oil change intervals without reservation.

    When this happens my Prius will learn to like 30wt. I have this paranoia that 0w16 will give my sober 2010 a drinking problem...

    They named it 0w16 instead of 0w15 so people would not confuse it with the already standard 15w oil grade. They are NOT the same thing.

    Update, still on this 0w16 oil since 4600 miles and very happy with MPG.

    Test without A/C in city only driving : 67,2 MPG (obd) average for 220 miles driven.
    Full stock, 40/38 psi on SAVA intensa HP tires (not LRR).
    24°c average outside temps.
    P&G use

    Very happy with results !

    this is what I was wondering about. Once upon a time ambient temps were given some consideration when choosing oil weight.

    Not a bad choice. Appreciate you may have gained some on fuel efficiency (albeit just for one tank, and perhaps you’re trying harder), but with average temp 24C, I’d also consider the engine.

    all that said, probably fine.
