In February17, i conducted a routine tune-up for my 2010 Prius at 107k miles, i had just picked it up used from a private seller and was unsure of its history. The interior, undercarriage and engine compartment was immaculate. Driving it home over 250 miles prove a little hesitation on the throttle response but no noticeable OBD2 code readouts. The project included new iridium spark plugs, oil & filter change, transmission fluid change & brake inspection. Also since I have a +2010 Prius, I conduct MAF throttle body preventive maintenance.

SPARK PLUGS. My first time swapping out spark plugs in the 2010 Prius was a challenge for the compact engine compartment. Unlike my Gen2 Prius 2005, just getting to spark plugs required some prior prep. I had to remove & thoroughly clean the cowel tray and windshield wiper assembly; figuring all the plastic/rubber out initially took 30 minutes as 1 windshield bolt was rusted and i was very cautious as not to break any plastic/rubber pieces. Now i had greater access to the fire wall and back of the engine compartment. Getting old plugs out was easy with a philips head and smaller plug socket set. All 4 old DENSO iridium spark
plugs were good and dry but showed some misfire carbon trace along the plug body. I replaced with 4 new Autolite iridium plugs; some rebate deal at Advanced Auto caught my eye..Should be good for another 100k. See pics.

OIL/TRANSMISSION FLUID. I conducted a standard oil change (4qts Carquest synthetic OW-20 & Purilator filter) and drained the transmission fluid ATF; both old oil and ATF was really black and moderately thick. Sticker on windshield revealed 1500miles in JAN since last oil change, but no indication as to last transmission fluid change. I refilled with 4qts of ATF WS (Valvoline Max Life Full Synthetic) into transmission compartment via a suspended 3ft 1/2" hose & funnel from above the engine bay. I did not use a siphon pump. Sorry no pics.

MAF, EGR, & THROTTLE BODY. The MAF & throttle body cleaning was straight forward. I'd say easier than the spark plugs, only due to no stripping away unmaintenanced parts. The air filter & tray and attached MAF was easy to disassemble with a screwdriver. Wiped those items down and heavily sprayed the now exposed MAF sensor with special MAF cleaning spray; i know its a simple cleaning chemical agent but it worked wonders for my 2005 Prius which is now regularly generating 90-100% green battery bars. Unfortunately this 2010 Prius model went away from the pretty green bar modeling, but i still today am not getting the excellent green bar regeneration in my 2010 as i am in my 2005. I actually removed the throttle body to get underneath it into the chamber. I heavily wet a rag with carburetor cleaner and wiped down all visible metal parts inside and out. My EGR-pipe cleaning was similar to many others' experiences. It was laden with carbon residue. I hit it hard in my deep sink with steel wool and carburetor cleaner. I equally hit other associated EGR pipes leading into and out of the main metal EGR-pipe (see pics). Carburetor spray cleaner with the straw was great in accessing tiny recesses of pipe and chemically loosening up the carbon reside/debris. I wiped all that away with carburetor cleaner soaked rags (see pics). I felt i made a lot of good progress on this cleaning maintenance.

    cheers.

    Nice pics!

I noticed that, after you cleaned the MAF sensor, you moved on and cleaned a bunch of EGR components, but kept writing MAF. :)

Chap-- Thanks for identifying, as you are correct. Those tubes are "EGR" associated. I'm still getting familiar with component nomenclature. Until now I've been referring to parts as "xxxx-doo-hickey". ; )

I'm making changes now to the thread for ease of digest and researching. Big thanks,

    Cheers
