True, but US and Europe are pretty heavily CCS. Possible to offer a different plug for each region? Tesla obviously does.

CCS came about because of CHAdeMO's high licensing fees, and because of it didn't originated here.

They use different communication protocol. So just switching the physical connector isn't enough. I think this why there isn't a CCS adapter for Tesla's yet.

But switching all the right bits isn't hard. Hyundai does it. The Ioniq Electric uses CHAdeMO is Korea and CCS in the US. They don't have an ownership stake CHAdeMO though.

I didn't realize they have an ownership stake. Is it a moneymaking business? How much of it do they own?

Perhaps they don't actually have a ownership stake.
"The CHAdeMO association was formed by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Fuji Heavy Industries (the manufacturer of Subaru vehicles). Toyota later joined as its fifth executive member.[5][6] Three of these companies have developed electric vehicles that use TEPCO's DC connector for quick charging." - CHAdeMO - Wikipedia

The Association collects membership and licensing fees, but these seem to go to promotion and development of the standard. Maybe it could be called a non-profit. Whatever the situation, Mitsubishi and Nissan use CHAdeMO in the US.
