A lot of newer OBD2 scanners will pull the hybrid module codes. I have a $10 unit with a cord that does just that.

    Ditto on Scotchbrit pads.

Alternatively you can find some nicely cleaned ones on eBay.

I was specifically referring to the readers used by auto parts stores who provide free code reading services. Literally thousands of threads here over the years from folks who either don't want to pay, need immediate readings, or just don't want the hassle of obtaining their own readers. So, they typically only have two options: paying big bucks at a dealership ($150+) or free at the auto parts store. Guess which one they choose? ;) . :)

Oh I know, I was just pointing out some of the cheap units these auto parts stores use now have the ability to pull some of the hybrid codes.

Once you have the codes and plan to do the work yourself getting your own reader is going to make your life easier.

I know this is right.. it just never made sense to me.

    48 inches = 4 ft, but 45 inch lbs = 3 ft lbs...

According to on online calculator 45 inch lbs = 3.75 ft lbs. That makes a little more sense. I guess you rounded down instead of rounding up.

Just divide inch/pounds by 12 to get foot/pounds.

Inch/pounds are basically a force applied one inch from fulcrum, vs 12" for foot/pounds.

Yikes......I failed math....Wait...you mean a foot is 12 inches and not 16? Geez....48 inch pounds IS 4 ft lbs. (not 3) . Sure am glad I use an inch pound torque wrench

I'll learn one of these days. I think its a mental thing for me, as the last part (pound) seems to trigger 16 in my head. Isn't the first time I've done this converting in-lb into ft-lb.

Best to get a 1/4" drive torque wrench, deal with the values in inch/pounds. I'd hazard the torque is similar to what you could do holding a 3/8" ratchet one handed, just covering the center with your hand and turning firmly.

Agreed. It's easier to be accurate with the higher resolution of inch/pounds in those low torque ranges. Otherwise, it's like weighing an envelope with a truck scale. (An exaggeration to make the point. :D)

Yeah I remember a Sears salesman saying you want to use a torque wrench nearer the middle of it's range; the ends are less accurate. I guess if I ever got into battery rebuild I'd shell-out for a 1/4" drive torque wrench. Right now I've only got 3/8" and 1/2". The 3/8" I just got a few years back, the 1/2" I've had for decades.

Our dentist(s) have these itty-bitty torque wrenches, for torquing implant pins. They're very expensive too, they've mentioned.

Back in the days when I was in the New-clear power program, if I'm remembering correctly, procedure (and Quality Control Inspectors) required all torque values to fall between 1/4 and 7/8 of the full scale of the torque wrench being used.

Scary to think, that a mushroom cloud on the horizon is just a wonky torque wrench away...
