It was probably the both the industrial expertise, availability of raw materials in the UK, and it's close proximity to the European continent and sales that bought production here.In 1898 Dunlop were producing tyres here in Birmingham having started in 1895 in Dublin Ireland.

GM are getting rid of Holden now.

BBC News - GM's Holden to stop making cars in Australia

I get the business case but I think they under estimate the strength of feeling of both the Vauxhall and Holden name. Many people buy that brand for some weird kind of loyalty. Once they become Opels then sales will bomb, just like when Peugeot closed down the UK arm to support their failing French operations. Sales of Peugeots in the UK have collapsed year after year since. The same will happen to Holden in Australia.

The Vauxhall Omega Opel Omega - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia was a big seller in the UK (a rebadged Holden) but GM HQ in Germany decided not to proceed with its replacement and that we'd like a number of weird small European based 'Vauxhalls' instead such as the Vauxhall Adam! For a start, what a crap name and it doesn't get any better after that.

GM Europe is as badly managed as GM worldwide. Their days are numbered.

I believe Camry sells very well in Australia, due to a good MRSP, it's manufactured/assembled there...
So the same goes in the opposite direction, when a car/brand is not manufactured in a country anymore, its sales may suffer...
