Hey, Mind expanding on the "death" rattle? My 150k car just started making a similar noise.

It means the EGR cooler needs to be cleaned. Lack of EGR flow thru the cooler allows the engine to spark knock. Once the EGR cooler is removed and cleaned, this noise should go away.

Ok Thanks. I guess the term "Death Rattle" sent my mind spinning with thoughts that the motor was done for and I had a very expensive visit in the future. This shouldn't be more than the average $300-400 reaming when the dealer has to do something. (Still expensive, but somewhat expected on a 150K car)

Thirteen 10mm bolts to remove the wiper cowl and motor. Three 14mm nuts to remove the wiper arms. Four 12mm nuts, one 12mm bolt, and three hose clamps to remove the EGR cooler. If you have an afternoon free and a decent set of hand tools, you can do this yourself.

A decent size storage container, a few gallons of water, and a container of Oxyclean will clean out the cooler. Let it soak in the Oxyclean solution. Thirty minutes to a couple of hours, followed by a hot wash with Dawn dishwashing liquid and water. Then rinse and blow dry with air compressor, if available.

If you go to the dealer, expect more than $400;).

They will not clean the cooler and are not usually amicable to the egr circuit cleanse:(.

Might want to look for an independent in your area for this task;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Relax. Car forums allow owners to discover common features and flaws in their cars, and examples of these often earn nicknames, and are often tongue-in-cheek or hyperbolic in nature.

It's like picking a band name. Deäth Rättle!

I have a clean spare ready to go;).

I do the work myself, but some mechanics will take on the task and clean the egr pipe and I take manifold, some will not:(.

You’ll have to call around to see, but as you’ll find reading here, getting this done after clearing 100 k miles is a must;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).
