Prius Plugin's lack of spare tire.

In NJ, the dealer's are still charging tax on the spare tire that the car doesn't come with.

 

how do they do that? don't you pay tax on the price of the vehicle?

 

In NJ, there's a $1.50 tax on every tire on a vehicle, so a car with a spare has a $7.50 tax added on a separate line of the invoice. They do it automatically, so you have to remind them to take the extra off when they sell you a spareless car.

 

oh, that is a strange tax. i thought we had them all covered in taxachusetts.

Um, we heard you on the other side of the country. CA has the same tax.

 

i wonder what the origin was, covered wagons?

 

It's a disposal and recycling fee. Same as we have for computers and tvs and mark my words, come Nov 11, grocery bags. I would be shocked if the origin of the tax wasn't from tree hugging hippies the next city over from me.

 

that makes sense. i wonder where the money goes, i snit there a disposal fee when you get new tyres?

 

I'm ok with it. Means I can drop off old electronics for no charge, at return-it.
