Hey everyone! I just purchased a 17 prius prime highest tier, and wondering what your keys look like. Mine looks like this but i'm pretty sure it's a whatever they could find cheapest and just paired it. The car was purchased from a salvage place so I only got one key, trying to figure out if i'm out of luck with the a/c button. I do believe the advanced is supposed to support the a/c button like in the picture posted. FYI only reason i'm asking is because I want to make a new key and seeing if purchasing the A/C one will allow me to have this feature. Thanks in advanced!

What I think is what I was supposed to get ?

My 2017 Advanced trim came with two fobs, both with the A/C button as shown in your second photo. That's all I know.

Did you try ply opening the fob you have and see if the remote A/C switch exists in between the Unlock and Panic buttons? I didn't think non-Prime fobs will be compatible to be programmed with a Prime. But I guess, the car is salvaged, anything is possible. I just think, maybe only the outer casing is from non-PP and the inside is actually one for the PP?

Second picture is the correct fob. Looks EXACTLY like mine.

First picture is a regular Gen 4 Prius. Looks EXACTLY like my wife's.

Getting them from Toyota will cost crazy money. I think I'd check with a hybrid specialty shop. The one I deal with is far cheaper than Toyota and they know more than the Toyota dealer because they are specialists.

Yeah! I've been hearing the same, checked my key and it is indeed missing that AC button even on the inside. Only reason I think I have no AC button is because they went with whatever was cheaper.

Thank you for your answer! I ordered the AC one and hoping my local shop can make it work with my prius. Really hoping to use that AC button in the summer with the car.

Just checked inside, it's the non-PP, completely confused as both are prime keys but one without AC. Will update if able to get new key to work.

Yeah, if it has no button for AC, then the fob is not for the PP. All PP trims from 2017 on have the remote A/C button. So, they must use a regular Prius fob and programmed it to your PP. By the way, I bought a "virginized" PP fob on-line for ~$100 when I first got my PP 5 years ago. At that time, I thought I was going to program it to have the third key fob in case I lose one (or two). But, I found out Toyota dealer and local lock smith would not do the programming using a "virginized" key. They require purchasing a new OEM key fob and programing fee for the cost of ~$500 total. I did not want to do that. I looked into doing the programming DIY, but that will require the functional Techstream. And I could not successfully use the pirated Techstream I downloaded to work on my old computer. So, I still have this extra "virginized" non-programed key fob with me. BTW, does your key fob have a physical key that opened the door? If it doesn't, then it's a sure sign that the fob was not meant to be for your PP.

I just checked the "key" itself, and it doesn't work!!! I don't know what I expected but these people just paired ANYTHING to this car. Hopefully my locksmith can pair the key I bought online to the car which is actually a PP key.

Yeah, the fact whoever sold you the car managed to program a non-PP fob to your PP, I am sure an authentic PP fob can also be programmed. The question is more about the cost and willingness of the operator (be it a dealer or locksmith). As for the physical key, if you are going to make one, then you will need a key code that came with the car when it was new. The key code was on a small aluminum tab with etched numbers. Without it, it takes a lot of $$$ to find the correct key pattern and make one. Again it will be a question of the cost and willingness of the operator (be it a dealer or locksmith).

Good luck. Keep us posted on what you find out.

I remember recently reading that the code is also on the lock itself if you don't mind popping off the interior door panel and digging in there.

I bet that is the reason for $$$ to replace the physical key if the key code tab is lost and the code is unknown. Basically, the labor cost to look it up.
