    ...but doing is learning.

I'm going to assume with some confidence this young man will not be doing a lot without some personal guidance on site. Learning to work on a hybrid is no different than working on any other car...especially when you're green. I started turning wrenches younger than 14...and will be retiring in just a few...with quite a lot. ;)

Remove the seat, get the pump/filter off, then siphon... :)

Sorry, but this is just generally bad life advice. Mere mortals designed the vehicle, a 14 year old is capable of learning its maintenance and I find it appropriate especially with some help and the awesome amount of info on the internet.

    No it isn't.

I bet I have about 4 times the real life experience that you do.

It is kind of like the same reason that they don't try to teach calculus in the 3rd grade.
AND the reason that if you want to build a tower, you start with the base.

    Respects, but...

I've got more related experience/knowledge than all of you put together will ever have...and you are dead wrong. You learn to do...by doing. Hybrids are not that complicated...just different in some way. If you don't know anything to start with...you don't have to unlearn. Everything has a procedure. With proper guidance this young man will leave us ALL behind.

Not legally. That would be a violation of the custodian's fiduciary responsibility.

    Key Takeaways

    • The Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) allows a minor to receive gifts without the aid of a guardian or trustee.
    • ...
    • The donor can name a custodian who has the fiduciary duty to manage and invest the property on behalf of the minor until the minor becomes of legal age.

Again, if not specifically for the child's benefit, then that is illegal. An actual crime.

So we're back to legal discussions again...instead of helping this young man get his car road worthy? Start a new thread please.

I would disagree with that. They are gifted a free car, they should take full advantage of the opportunity to learn about it and work with it. Worst case, they trash the car and are right back where they started.

I rebuilt my first engine at 15 years old, when the family car died. A bit of advice from some friends, a few borrowed and rented tools, some time with the JC Whitney catalog, and the deed was done. Today with the internet, this young man can find pretty much everything he needs to get this car running.

This forum alone is a few orders of magnitude more information than I had (a Haynes manual).
