    Update:

The dealer didn’t have either tire valve cap in stock. I will order the 90942-05039 at my cost to replace the one they lost. They are only carrying aftermarket caps. In fact, I saw someone bringing an aftermarket strut; so, they don’t seem very keen on OEM Toyota parts.

The two old tires with 46,000 miles on them had 6.4/32” tread left. Dunlop Enasave 01 A/S 91S specs 8/32” for new tire. I am keeping the two old tires as well as one with only 5,000 miles on it in case I keep getting nails. There is also a two-year replacement warranty.

Last time I put air in the tires in my new car I noted that those caps don't screw on that easily for me. You have to fiddle with them a little. A larger black replacement might not be a bad thing.

Just make sure that it is not metal and has a rubber bushing inside to seal the valve.

You made me go out and look. :)

First time I noticed a rubber cap with a little o-ring like that.
On the other hand, first time I've looked.

As far as I know valve cap's dual missions are to keep the valve clean, and not corrode onto the valve. I'm somewhat in awe of your (plural) quest for the correct valve cap; it's in a different league, say compared to third gen engine overhaul gasket kit info.

Ha ha, any plastic tire valve cap with a rubber bushing inside will work in 95% of the scenarios. The OEM tire valve cap is of slightly higher quality and, unlike the non-TPMS tire valve caps @VelvetFoot mentioned, it has many threads; so, it will not fall off if it is not screwed on tight. Non-TPMS tire valve caps fall off when you drive if you don’t fully tighten them. That is the biggest drawback of non-TPMS tire valve caps. You can get similar plastic TPMS tire valve caps with many threads and a rubber bushing on Amazon.

TPMS tire valve cap on Amazon, black

TPMS tire valve cap on Amazon, light gray/silver

The silver ones look like the stock ones on our gen 3.

I always get flack from my son, for holding the valve cap in my teeth, while bumping up pressures (with the bicycle pump you deride ;)). Had to get a new one, same brand, due to backing a vehicle over the previous.

Interesting. Toyota now uses black ones. They must have used silver ones in the past. Vaguely recalling, my 2009 Corolla XLE had silver ones, too, I think.

I'm kinda with your son. It's going to be covered with brake dust and other road crud exactly the same as what's on the wheel!

Yeah, what are you thinking @Mendel Leisk?! Hopefully, at least those brake pads are asbestos-free. LOL

    Are you certain?

I'm pretty sure my MINI pads contained asbestos.

So, @Hammersmith, it looks like I have solved the mystery. 90942-05039 and 90942-A5002 are entirely identical and both made in Japan by Pacific Industrial Co., Ltd.

The difference is that Toyota buys them from Pacific Industrial Co., Ltd. in bulk, and 90942-05039 is packaged in bags of ten in Japan by Toyota Japan, whereas the 90942-A5002 is packaged in bags of ten in the USA by Toyota USA.

What lengths we go to keep our Priuses stock. LOL We have learned something new about the Toyota part-numbering system though. Apparently, an identical part can have multiple part numbers depending on where it is packaged, especially if it is a bulk part.

Good to know. I'm planning on buying 20 or so during Black Friday because I swapped to winter tires this weekend and noticed(because of this part of the thread) that my caps are a mishmash of different types after only 2.5 years. I'm going to buy a bunch of Toyota caps and make sure everything I own that use valves uses them. Lawn mower, snow blower, wheeled carts, etc. Plus have a bunch more for spares.

Note that for non-TMPS tire valves, there is the CL-type tire valve cap from Pacific Industries Co., Ltd. instead of the PVC25 type. I don't know if Toyota still uses it and there is a Toyota part number for it. My 1985 Corolla had that tire valve cap on the spare tire. It has a rubber bushing as well but much fewer threads, and there is no protruding concentric cylinder with a lip inside.

Had the dealer replaced some of the OEM Japanese Pacific tire valve caps with aftermarket ones when you purchased the car?

No. But I had the wheels in question remounted a few times during the first year for the summer/winter tire swap. I now have two sets of wheels, but during my first winter I only had the original set. I figure that's when the mismatch happened.

So is the $3.31 MSRP for a single cap or a pack of 10?

Oh, no, Toyota parts are never that cheap and never sold in packs. I bought 2 and paid $2.135 each before tax with the current discounts.

I figured, but I wanted to double check. Although it might have been funny if I ordered 20 and ended up with 200. lol

I'll pick them up next week during Black Friday for $1.72 each. I'm just trying to decide if I want to buy a set of brakes. I won't need them for a few years, but it's not like they go bad and they're only going to go up in price. Would be easy enough to buy a set of pads, rotors, and fittings and stick them on a shelf until I eventually need them.
