Toyota recalls 625,000 hybrid cars globally for software glitch| Reuters

Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it would recall about 625,000 hybrid cars globally to fix a software glitch that could, in limited cases, shut down the hybrid system while the car is being driven.
Models affected are certain Prius v minivans, called Prius alpha and Prius+ in some markets, among other models, produced between May 2010 and November 2014, the automaker said.
About 340,000 vehicles of the total are in
Japan, 160,000 in Europe, and 120,000 in North America, it said, adding there had been no reports of crashes or injuries.

Same software glitch that 3 gen had updated recently?

Reading between the lines, I wonder what, if any, effect this will have on mpg and HV battery life...

Telmo744 - Hum-m-m...It says, "...certain Prius v minivans, called Prius alpha and Prius+". Use of the "minivan" term versus “station wagon,” and the "alpha & +" seems to imply those v(vee) types with Lithium-Ion Traction Batteries, like in the seven (7) passenger Australian v(vee)s, not those with NiMH batteries like those used in the five (5) passenger U.S. v(vee) wagons.

    SAFETY RECALLS
Information last updated: July 15, 2015

    Title

Safety Recall F0R (F1R) - Preliminary Notice - Certain 2012-2014 Prius v - Software Update for Motor Generator ECU and Power Management ECU

    Status

    Remedy Not Available

    Description

Inside the Hybrid Inverter Assembly is an Intelligent Power Module (IPM) which contains a control board equipped with transistors. In certain Model Year 2012-2014 Prius V vehicles, the current software settings for the motor generator ECU and power management ECU could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged.

    Remedy

When the remedy becomes available, Toyota will update the motor generator ECU and power management ECU software in the involved vehicles.

    Recall Date

    July 15, 2015

    Dealer Reference ID

    F1R

    NHTSA Reference ID

    AWAITING#

If, even after the yet to be devised software fix, any inverter IPM transistors were to fail prematurely, I would certainly be looking for free goodwill replacement.

Except it includes 120k cars in North America, and I haven't heard of Canada or Mexico getting the 3rd row seat version. From the US release, the issue is in the M/G control unit, and has nothing to do with the battery.

Guess I'll be checking the vin on the wife's v later today...

Is this the same recall for the liftback a while back that killed everyone's mpg by 5-10 mpg?? I hope not..

This driving stunt was done after the patch.

I have tried to find "anyone" who claims to have lost mileage to investigate the problem. So far, these 'claimants' have all run away. My offer stands but since I can not replicate their problem, it remains open.

Reply from helpful dealership on the announced F1R recall campaign:

"I'm sorry I don't have any eta when the software update will be available nor do we have any technical instructions at this time. You will be notified by the manufacturer within a timely fashion once the recall goes into effect. Please refer to Toyotas web site for more information."

It was a bad battery day for me, a UPS gone bad and a pad that will only charge to 50%. Nearest repair place is 50 miles. I took the v.

109000 certain Prius v, sounds like a subset but gotta be a big subset. How many sold?

That was my first thought too, but then how do you explain 120k cars from NA involved in the recall ?

I get 114,820 Prius v sold in USA from 2011-2014, but that probably includes a few thousand 2015 models. So I am thinking 109,000 from above probably represents all 2012 to 2014 model year v's.
