It takes emission from manufacturing to recycling at the end of life cycle, not just from tailpipe or fuel production.

that's a better way to do it. i have to agree with the guy in the first article, that hybrids haven't peaked yet, and will eventually become the leader, before other technologies take over.

Here is a nice Motor Trend article covering the Prius and Volt.
It seems Prius real world economy is very good(ofcourse at least in california weather). Prius 0-60 listed as 9.7 secs, which seems better than Gen III.

BTW, scroll down all the way for acceleration data.

Honestly, I wanted to buy a Volt. I test drove a 2013 and I was ok with it, although that generation had a little less storage space and felt smaller. I still liked the efficiency. I live in NC, and in December they announced that the 2016 Volt wouldn't be coming to NC, I would have to wait for the 2017, which they suggested might be out in July, but I'm already skeptical of their estimates. Indignant, I started shopping for 2016 Priuses, and bought a Two ECO a few weeks ago.

seems to be a question of how much driving you do. but it would be a much better comparison if they would make one as big as a prius.

    And as adaptable
    And as reliable
And with the details as well engineered

Production of the 2017 Volt officially began yesterday but I don't know when the first 2017 will actually be delivered in NC.

The MotorTrend article was entertaining and generally positive about the 2016 Volt but I wonder how skewed their efficiency measurements were.

They used a gizmo on each car that calculates mpg by measuring the exhaust for CO2 resulting from burning gasoline. However, you can see from the low-res photo in their article that the manner in which they installed it on the Volt would seem to be much less aerodynamic.

Not entertaining? Not positive about the Volt? Volt gizmo install improved the car's aerodynamics?

I driven the first Gen Volt and the 0-60 numbers on the 2nd gen looks close. The Volt has a lot more power than the Prius. It was actually fun driving a hybrid with some power.

    Great article!

The really good thing is that there IS a choice.
I really like the Volt2 (warts and all) and by the time they're in the second or third model year I'll have about ten years on my current ride. :)
Of course by then, maybe the Prius will have done some tweaks as well.....and Hyundai's PHEV will be available as well as a for-real 200-mile BEV for $35K.

    Goooood Stuff.

    HEY TOYOTA!!!!
If you're over this gas huffing thing that you've been tinkering with, why not leverage your hybrid into a real PHEV????

    Really?
    Hydrogen??? ;)

2016 Volt emission is rated 190 grams per mile in NC. 2016 Prius Eco is also rated 190 g/mi nationwide.

I really like the idea of the volt. Mostly due to being an American product. (Team player and I'm proud to be a mercan)

But love the prius. Really do. the ride, comfort, cargospace and mostly the longevity.
Which leads to my question, any information or thoughts on the life span of the volt?

saw a volt next to a gen 3 prius this morning. the volt looked comparable on the outside, but wow, small on the inside. front seats did look comfy and all that stuff, but maybe a bit to cockpittish, like the gen 3 instilled.
will be interesting to compare to prime, now that it's right sized.

Old Volt or new 2016+ Volt?
