Outline mode only shows about 100 posts currently. If you click on page 2 (implying to see the next page of outline posts past the first 100) you merely go to post #1 again but not in outline mode. Just try it on any thread that has many posts. Such as the ]you[ thread.

Just feedback for you Danny. I appreciate your dedication to this board.

    Cheers

Drop-down? Um, I'm running a TEXT browser here, and if I was using
a GUI browser routinely to read PC I would have all that scripting
muck turned off anyways. So evidently the board upgrade has
REMOVED an important piece of functionality, and therefore here
is my official request to please have the search link restored.
    .
[aside: I figured out how to get to it manually, but that is
irrelevant to the *principle* of what I'm saying here. I often
point people to PC and say "go search it for xxxxx", and if they
can't do that then it's nonconstructive.]

I'm trying to make an image for my signature, but it keeps coming up as a thumbnail.

Are there size restrictions to make it come out regular? If so...where are they so I can modify it so it works? I'm doing a search but I can't find the posts where this is stated.

What is missing from this board is a clear mission statement. All businesses have them. But I do not see one listed when I looked today. If this board is merely Danny's hobby board then so be it. He has the right to run it that way. But given the amount of energy he is putting into the technical aspects of this forum he appears to want this board to succeed. But how does it succeed when people are free to put simply anything they want with no clear direction? Today (April 3, 2006) there is even a posting titled "Does pornography "damage the brain"?" Now what does this have to do with the Prius? Sure it was posted in Fred's House of Pancakes but it is still part of PriusChat not an X-rated forum.

This forum appears to me to ignore the real threat to its success. Namely, the long range implications of this type of posting. There is a time and place for everything. But posting articles about porn are not what this forum should be about, in my opinion, no matter how proper the article is cloaked to appear.

Toyota is a very conservative company and I suggest that if PriusChat wishes to be seen as contributing in a positive way toward Energy issues that subjects like Porn are not included. I doubt web sites which discuss porn do not include discussions about the Prius for the same exact reason. It simply is not the best time and place to do so. I am no prude, but attention to perceived values on this board will go a long way to improving its place long term.

Daniel, I believe this is what you were trying to get across when talking about the ]you[ tag. Yes, it is funny but this forum is getting the attention of the world. Think about it. Just like one could get away with things when you were a teenager that you can not now, I suggest one look at this forum the same way. It is time to give it a professional point of view. It is a hard balance to attain but there should be lines drawn in the sand which provide people the knowledge what is acceptable and what isn't. Otherwise there will always be people who will want to push the envelope and test it.

Bottom line Danny, you have the option to take my opinion or not. I am merely attempting to give a constructive opinion.

    Sincerely,

First let me state VERY clearly that I do not speak for Danny, he's very much capable of doing that himself. And that this is his forum.

One other member recently got very upset with me when I refused to engage him on this issue of "the purpose" of PriusChat...he didn't directly mention a "Mission Statement" as you did, but he might as well have.

First of all, I think the entire concept of a Mission Statement is a bit silly....at least in how they ultimately get worded, then ultimately become almost a test of one's loyalty to be able to recite said Mission Statements. During our hospital inspections the staff are routinely pulled away from taking care of patients to be given 'pop quizes' to see if they know the mission statement, where the closest fire extinguisher is, etc.

In the case of PriusChat, the actual home page is down at this time, but I believe it says something like "A community for Prius enthusiasts". To me, that is more than adequate of a mission statement and communicates a lot of information without narrowing the possibilities in such a way to discourage an expansive purpose.

Now, if Danny's 'hidden goals" are, indeed, to make this site as big as possible and for it to eventually be sold, ala GreenHybrid.com, to some corporate conglomerate, or to become a sub-site for Toyota itself, then you're right, he'd better start banning the likes of MS, jared, me, and a number of other 'rabble rousers' and focussing tightly on Prius content. Then he can bow down 'to the man', keep the religious right grinning like lambs and be "successful"...if that's how one defines success.

I think the growth of this site speaks volumes. Fred's (or the like) has been around since the beginning and it's one of the things that keeps me coming here...I think that's true of a quiet majority of people. Certainly a number have left b/c of it as well...but you'll never please all the people all the time. But if you want a fair cross section of middle America having a place like Fred's is a good way to bring real people in and to build something more than a technical site...a community of diverse people, personalities and opinions.

Danny thanks for fixing the ability to import avatars from my own computer and so easily. I can forsee us changing avatars frequently with our latest cool photo. You're doing a great job. I can't wait to look smarter than I really am by using spell check. I hope you get to enjoy being unemployed long enough to get this board up to your new standards and then some extra time for playing.

what marinjohn said. and don't forget to make your fiancee feel special every now and then ;)

i agree with evan's thought that fred's is part of the board. if it weren't for that forum i probably wouldn't be around nearly as much either. while i (we) enjoy helping others out when they have car problems or questions, either there isn't enough of that going on to keep me here day to day or it's just me (without DH around) and i can't answer many of those questions on my own. so i browse everything, star topics that i need to go back to with DH later on (btw, love the star feature Danny) and enjoy the conversation that goes back and forth in the meantime.

if this were strictly a prius board i (we) would be long gone. i didn't stick around prius online very long, or greenhybrid, or any of the yahoo groups. there's something more here, a community that's more than unidimensional discussion.

    well- back to the bench.

I could not agree with you more Evan. I am getting the idea that you feel the purpose of my comments are to ban everyone who isn't of the religious right. If that is the case you have not understood my comments at all. I understand where you are coming from. You and I agree there needs to be a community. But do you not have any limits on unacceptable behavior? Do you feel just because there are extreme threads that the community is made stronger?

Under the same logic we should not have any law enforcement. There should be no laws or rules. I hope I am wrong. But your comments lean toward that type of view concerning the Prius "community". What I am suggesting is to make clear that this place, this community, has values. It has something called ethics and principles. We are not children but many act that way in Freds. Is that what you want?

I hope I have made my views clearer. I am not trying to force my morals on you or anyone else. But deep down I think there are limits which should be understood. That is why we are a country of laws. Or do you have contempt for that as well?

    Sincerely

I didn't think you were suggesting banning all but the religious right...sorry if I led you to think that.

But your comparisons to lawlessness are a tad exagerated don't you think. We have limits on the kind of language that can be used...just b/c some topics are not one's you'd bring up at the annual church picinic doesn't mean they're not worth of discussion.

    Evan,

This is important. I believe my comparisons were right on target. What we have here are values judgements of the Internet era. Would you honestly say you would feel comfortable discussing the merits of x-rated material in a room of strangers? With people you have never met before but in person? People who have just walked into the room and someone brings this up for everyone to hear? And all the while you are one of the hosts. Would you feel embarrassed? This is what is occurring here.

Does your approval of discussing these questionable subjects in person feel comfortable to you. If not, why would you feel any different online? Do your values change just because you are online?

These are the issues I feel need to be discussed. Our community should feel just as comfortable online as it is in person.

I am glad we are able to discuss this.

I totally disagree. Fred's is Fred's...no one needs to walk into that room. If there was a room that said "explicit discussion of any topic discussed in here", with the title of the subject currently under discussion then I could choose to enter or not enter that room as my morals, judgement and insticts told me. No one is forced to read the "pornography thread"--if the subject makes you uncomfortable then don't click the damn link--how hard is that?

And, since you asked, yes, I'd feel comfortable. It's a rare situation I'm uncomfortable in and an even rarer situation I find myself unable to voluntarily extract myself from. You implied that people are forced into these discussions and that's simply not even remotely the truth of the matter.

My values do not change online or anywhere else. I'm very comfortable with my morals, values and beliefs in any setting.

Once again, you can't please all the people unless you completely white wash the board. I used the word "Damn" above. I promose that someone's offended greatly by that. Do we play to the lowest common denominator...no, but being open and non-judgemental is important.

We limit attacks, but discussions about the issues of our day are, IMO, not out of line here. Despite the vocal objectors I think it actually can make this community closer and build understanding.

    Evan:

Thank you for your candid comments.

I guess we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

I doubt a majority of people would feel comfortable walking into a room full of strangers and openly discuss questionable issues. The feeling of comfort just couldn't be there. Why? Simply because it takes time to build up trust.

When certain users on PriusChat introduce subjects whose only purpose is to push the envelope people will naturally question their own participation. I can't help but think that does not build understanding nor bring the PriusChat community closer together as you suggest. Far from it.

I also feel you do not represent the majority of every day people in this country or any other country for that matter. I have had the opportunity to travel and it is this very issue which makes many overseas wonder how we hope to gain any respect in this world. The idea that you can ignore feelings is at the root of this whole issue. You seem to flaunt it as a badge of honor. The hell with peoples feelings. You prove this when you said "you can't please all the people unless you completely white wash the board." Why is it either black or white? This world is vastly more gray. You imply white washing subjects means to have dull issues. I respectfully disagree. I merely suggest that our community have some self respect and show restraint when choosing subjects. But as long as moderators here do not stand up for basic values, those who will take advantage of it will obviously do so. And that is the shame in it.

Danny, you now have, what I consider some fairly well represented points of view. Thank you for allowing me to share mine. Ultimately it is your call Danny.

    Regards

Once again, no one is forced to participate in any of this...you've ignored that point in 2 posts now.

I do not say "the hell with people's feelings", but I'm also not saying "I have some strict values and I'm going to impose them on other people."

I take great offense at your saying I don't stand up for basic values. I say there is not such thing as "basic values". We define them within ourselves. If something does not fit our personal value set then we have the ability to ignore them. No one in any way is forced to participate in anything against his/her own values. But if one wishes to expand his comfort zone and explore his world and the people within it then that opportunity is there.

I have very strong values...just b/c they don't match your value set doesn't make them any less wrong. If 'basic values' is defined by what your value set is then you're right, I don't stand up for them. I stand up for everyone's values.

*sigh* ... hijacked from objective board mechanics/features into
