If you left the door open most likely the 12 volt battery in the back hatch area is dead. That battery is used to boot up the car. Very common failure.

Don't turn the car on but just turn on the headlights and see how bright they are. If no lights or very dim that battery is dead. Many alternatives to the original factory battery here but not sure what you have over there. For comparison the factory battery at our dealer charges $250 for this battery plus installation.

Do you have Smart Key System or do you need to stick the fob in the slot under the steering wheel to start the car? If no Smart Key System (SKS) that car will then use a slightly smaller battery current wise. Slightly cheaper.

I say replace because it may be the original or very old and it is very dangerous to jump start this car. Easily cause accident by getting the polarity's wrong. If you must jump the car make sure polarity is correct to under hood front jump points and do not let the donor car run or race the motor. The donor car engine should not be on.
Please review your owners manual for location of jump points. Under hood to the right of silver box (Inverter) inside the black plastic fuse box. Inside that box flip up red plastic cover. Thats the B+ or POSITIVE terminal. Use the bolt on the chassis right above it that holds the strut on for GROUND.

    Good Luck.

Charging the battery for 20 minutes or so is another good option.

MUCH less likely to cause any damage......even if the leads are accidentally reversed.

And if the battery is over 3 years old, a replacement probably is in order.
If it is the original 12 V battery that came with the car new in 2005.......then you are lucky that it lasted this long and a replacement is definitely required now.

How do you KNOW that the 12V is working normally ??
The odds are GREAT that it is NOT.

    1. Replace the fob battery now (CR2032)
    2. Replace the 12V battery if (1) does not help

You have said the 12V battery is still working normally, but how have you concluded that? What testing did you do to arrive at this conclusion?

Just to be sure, can you run the testing in this post: Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Test The Battery, and report the three voltages back to us. In addition when you are in IG-ON mode put your headlights on full beam and report the time it takes for the voltage to drop below 11.0V. If the voltage does not drop below 11.0V within 2 minutes, just report what the voltage was at the 2 minute mark.

The voltages we want to see are:

    1) ACC mode:
    2) IG-ON mode:
    3) Time taken to reach 11.0V: or Voltage at 2 min mark:
    4) READY mode:

    Thanks and hope that helps.

Other Prius owners have seen that message. Usually that is a false warning caused by a failing 12V battery.

not sure what you have for batteries there. without more info, i would go with the dealer spec. is there a vent tube on both?
