I bought the Charger/Simple Discharger kit back in January, and found it a bit of a pain having to closely monitor the discharging, so recently I sprang for the Intelligent Discharger, and last weekend did a complete re-con cycle on my 2009 Gen II, and here's the note I put in my Gas/Maintenance Log:
Date: 20160711
Traction battery re-condition: 112800 miles

1. charge & balance, discharge to 134 V
2. charge & balance, discharge to 84 V
3. charge & balance, discharge to 17V
4. 12 hour charge
5. let sit for 1 hour before driving.
6. total time 40 hours (approximately)

I would think with 4 cars to maintain, one kit (plus 3 harnesses) plus Intelligent Discharger, might be a wise investment. BTW if anyone in my locale (1 hour driving from Nausea, Southern New Hamster) is wanting to recon their Gen II Traction-Battery, you deal with the harness, and I'm sure we could come to some arrangement about charging/discharging. (I'm not associated in any way with Hybrid-Systems, but the offer is there if anyone needs it!) - hope this helps - Wil

PS: To the OP, surely you could discharge one car whilst the next is being charged? …that way the overall time would be reduced…

 

I noticed with my Intel-Charger, that when the discharge finished, and it shut off(although the fans still ran, and the lights were on) the voltage on the meter crept slowly up, so I didn't see it get to 134V, but by the time I took a look it was back up to 192V. I had questions about the fact that the setting knob was so small and exactly how critical was it to set the termination voltage accurately, and was told by Hybrid engineer that it was not especially critical, although he explained the need for 3 distinct discharges (to 0.8V/cell, 0.5V/cell, and 0.1V/cell) and how important it was to make sure the "balance phase" took place (i.e. not a bad thing to let it charge for a long time) It's all explained in the User Destructions, but some of it is a trifle obscure, and I'm a stickler for details (that's where the Devil is reputed to be! ) …and I think I might be slightly OCD - Jeff runs a great shop, and bends over backwards to help his customers (…even the OCD idiots like myself!) - Wil

 

I don't think you should let it discharge while going to bed, you don't want to leave it at a discharged state, the worry of reverse charge damage

 

My thinking exactly! (…and if I'd had 4 Prii needing maintenance, I'd have bought it back in January instead of waiting until July!)

 

I think it's important to charge immediately after discharge. The intelligent discharge prevents discharging too low with too high of current. Not so you can sleep on it and leave it at a discharged state.

Hey all The Intelligent Discharger doesn't speed the process up much, but it makes it MUCH simpler. It allows the user to set the desired minimum discharge voltage, press go, and walk away. It automatically tapers the load down from 2.5A during normal operating range voltages to 200mA as the pack deep discharges. The low current load protects the battery and allows more energy to be extracted from the pack. As the pack descends through the deep discharge voltage range the voltage drop will accelerate.

The Intelligent Discharger does enable overnight discharging. I agree that the time the pack is in a deep discharge state should be minimized, but a few hours is OK. We have many shops who are using these around the clock to service their customers cars. The ID will terminate the voltage when the preset trigger is reached, and the pack voltage will 'bounce back' after the load is removed. A bounce back of up to 40 volts is typical depending on how deep the pack is drained.

 

Yes, normal. How long did the pack top balance before the second discharge cycle? The less time top balancing, the faster the subsequent discharge will go.
