I will tell you from my experience having several vinyl wrapped company vehicles, the paint still looks new when the vinyl is removed after several years, providing you dont get any damage to the vinyl (rocks, etc). It's basically a protective film for the paint.

The warranty on the film is longer than that--unless the OP is considering some really crappy film. Both of my cars have had the film on them longer than that.

Check out the Satin Guard product that Premier Protective Films installs. It is thicker than most vinyl wraps and offers good impact protection as well.

Are you referring to decorative vinyl wraps or to protective films which usually aren't vinyl?

He did say vinyl wrap, that would qualify as a real crappy protective film.

That helps, most of the answers you were getting were about clear protective films. I can't help you an that one but do know that you need to specify which version of 3M vinyl you are considering. There are different types, some are good outside and some aren't as good outside.

I just fully wrapped my car, and in doing so removed some wrap i had put on months earlier. No problems with paint at all. I had to clean off some specks of the adhesive that stuck to the car, but they came right off with windex. I used windex to prepare the surface for the new wrap.

the gloss vinyl will scratch more easily.

Also, you have to maintain the vinyl with a weekly wash otherwise, if dust collects, it will look ugly :p

Don't worry about paint. I would make sure it is a good brand though.
I have my roof wrapped as well as a few other parts of the car. Most of my past cars has had parts like the roof and trunk wrapped as well. No issues with paint.
+1 to keeping it up though. Dust build up, bird sh*t and other natural elements can harm and change/damage the wrap pretty easily.

Lastly, the install is important. It has to be put on correctly.
