Be very careful what you run over:

I was going around a freeway connector ramp, In the rain, and had no choice but to run over these pieces of scaffolding.
One of them got stuck under the car and put a 3 inch gash in the oil pan.
some minor damage to the plastic body under cladding also.
Better than through the windshield though.

New Oil Pan & steam clean undercarriage, plus new oil - $ 550.00

    BTW 194,000 miles

At least you did not continue to drive after running over those things. Geez what a nightmare.

    Ouch.

Now my bumper scrapes from the curb no longer seem so bad.

I remember a co-worker telling me a story of how much it cost him when his wife wrecked the car trying to avoid an aluminum ladder that fell off the truck ahead of her. He told her from then on just run over something if there was not enough time or space to safely get around it.
Your safe and the repair cost was still less than a couple of payments on a new car.

The oil looks pretty dark, high time it was changed. :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, good you pulled right over, avoided further disaster. What about filing an insurance claim? Don't ask?

    I was in a curve at 55 to 60 with a car in my 7 o'clock blind-spot.
Once the piece of scaffolding was under the car, continuing driving really wasn't an option.
Thinking about the $550 makes me wish I had taken more evasive action.
Looking at this picture, you can see the oil trail off the freeway.
The cars in the background are very much in the same position as I was.
My sight was transfixed on the debris and I didn't have enough time to get a look into the mirror to see if I could have changed lanes.

You absolutely did the right thing. Swerving or changing lanes blindly could cause you to lose control and hit another vehicle. It could be a much bigger accident to swerve.

I had this happen to me when my car was only a few months old. At 65 mph, I rammed straight into a box that must have fell off another car. It was a $3000 repair. My insurance company said since I had no license plate of the vehicle that dropped the package, I was 100% at fault. It was no different than if I ran into a pole or a wall. Not only did I have to pay the deductible but I lost the good driver discount on my insurance.

What cheapo insurance company was that? I'll be sure to avoid them!

Your car was damaged by a road hazard, like hitting a deer. It is not at all the same as hitting a light pole or wall, because light poles and walls are not in the middle of a road.

If that happened on a Freeway in L.A. There would have been 10 Fire Trucks, 4or5 CHP vehicles and a full response HASMAT team. Oh, I forgot...a 4hr. Sigalert

Looking at this photo I don't see any rain or even dampness on the road... Even the side of the car looks dry. Am I missing something?

The photos were taken about 90 min after the incident.
AAA did not impress me much with their response time.

Complain to AAA . They don't do the tow, they sublet it to a tow company that is designated.

Throw those scaffolding pieces into your hatch and unload it at your local scrap yard for cold hard cash!! You could use it to offset your losses?

    ;)
